Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is touting a new chain of gas stations called Freedom Fuel, which is selling gas for $3.479 a gallon, well below market prices and wholesale costs. I mean, who doesn’t love cheap gas, right? But let’s take a closer look at this story. Trump is promoting these stations, saying they’re taking the lead and others should follow. He even wrote about it on Truth Social, highlighting the July 3 opening of 25 Freedom Fuel stations in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey.
The national AAA average is $3.85 per gallon, and in Pennsylvania, it’s $3.99, so these prices are a big deal. But here’s the thing: this bargain is only available at a handful of stations out of tens of thousands nationwide. And CNN hasn’t been able to confirm if all the Freedom Fuel stations are even open. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded like a great story, but I’m not so sure.
The White House says Freedom Fuel is a private company with no government support or subsidies, but it’s unclear who’s running these discount gas stations and for how long. The company didn’t reply to requests for comment, which raises some eyebrows. Jeff Lenard, spokesperson for the National Association of Convenience Stores, says there’s no way these stations can be profitable or sustainable charging that much below cost.
Most drivers pulling into one of the stations in Bristol, Pennsylvania, were just happy to find cheaper gas, but some were skeptical. James Lymer, a retired guy, was thrilled to save about $8 filling up his SUV, but another driver, Bud Shank, said he’s not a fan of the Trump administration, and lower fuel prices aren’t changing his view of the president. Meanwhile, a competing independent gas station owner, Muhammad Irfan, is struggling to keep up with Freedom Fuel’s prices, saying he can’t even compete.
It’s interesting to note that some major retailers like Costco can sell gas below market prices because of the sheer volume of fuel they buy. But for smaller stations like Freedom Fuel, it’s unclear how they’re managing to keep prices so low. Irfan says if they’re getting financial support from the government or Trump supporters, it’s very unfair. Bless their hearts, trying to make a living in the gas station business.
As I finish my coffee, I’m left wondering how long these low prices will last and who’s really behind Freedom Fuel. Is it a genuine attempt to help drivers, or is it just a publicity stunt? Either way, I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this story in the coming days. And who knows, maybe I’ll even fill up my tank at one of these stations if I’m in the area. After all, cheap gas is always a good thing, right? 🚗💨
