xAI Sues User For Doing Exactly What You'd Expect With AI

Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Elon Musk’s xAI is suing a user, Terry Wayne Harwood, for allegedly using the Grok chatbot to create child sexual abuse materials. Yes, you read that right – child sexual abuse materials. It’s a pretty serious allegation, and I’m not surprised xAI is taking action. I mean, who wouldn’t want to distance themselves from that kind of disgusting content?

According to the lawsuit, Harwood used Grok to create explicit images without the subjects’ knowledge or consent. He was also arrested earlier this year in South Carolina on multiple counts of alleged sexual exploitation of a minor. I’m not a lawyer, but it sounds like Harwood is in a whole lot of trouble. CNN has reached out to his attorney for comment, but I’m not holding my breath for a response.

The lawsuit claims that Harwood created multiple xAI accounts and entered “misleading prompts” to create explicit deepfakes of both minors and adults. He allegedly designed these prompts to circumvent xAI’s built-in safeguards against creating explicit material depicting minors. It’s like he thought he could outsmart the system or something. Bless their hearts.

The lawsuit also mentions that Harwood’s actions exposed xAI to significant legal risk and reputational damage. I can see why – if I were a company, I wouldn’t want to be associated with this kind of content either. xAI claims that it has suspended over 52,000 accounts and made over 73,000 reports to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2026, resulting in at least 244 arrests. That’s a lot of numbers, but it sounds like xAI is taking this issue seriously.

The lawsuit seeks a declaration that Harwood broke the site’s Terms of Service and unspecified damages. I’m not sure what kind of damages xAI is looking for, but I hope it’s enough to make Harwood think twice about his actions. xAI has faced scrutiny over its chatbot before, including a series of violent and antisemitic posts from Grok last year. The company apologized and blamed a system update, but it looks like they’re still working out some kinks.

In conclusion, this whole story is just a mess. I mean, who uses a chatbot to create child sexual abuse materials? It’s just disgusting. I’m glad xAI is taking action, but it’s a shame that it had to come to this. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up – and I wish I didn’t have to read about it in my morning coffee. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded like a great story to wake people up to, and I guess they were right. Anyway, that’s the story – a sad and disturbing one, but an important reminder that there are still some pretty terrible people out there. 🙄
