Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump’s strategy for the 2026 midterm elections is to label Democrats as “socialists” and “communists” at every turn. And there is evidence that democratic socialism is gaining somewhat more of a foothold in recent Democratic primaries. But let’s be real, the bigger story here is that Americans are losing faith in capitalism and economic fairness.
I mean, who can blame them? The system does seem rigged to favor the wealthy. A recent Fox News poll shows that views of capitalism have gone from 30 points positive in 2019 to just four points positive today. And 65% of voters agree that the system is rigged to favor the wealthy. That’s up from 56% in Trump’s first term. You can’t make this stuff up, right?
But what’s really interesting is that some of the biggest shifts in opinion are happening among Republicans. Fewer than half of Republicans now have a strongly favorable view of capitalism, and 42% of them think the system is rigged to favor the wealthy. Bless their hearts, it seems like they’re starting to wake up to the fact that the system might not be working for everyone.
And it’s not just Republicans. A June Wall Street Journal-NORC poll found that fewer than half of Americans say capitalism is working even “somewhat” well. And 61% of Americans are bothered by the feeling that the wealthy don’t pay their fair share in taxes. It’s no wonder that candidates who promise to overhaul the economic system are gaining traction.
Now, I know some people might say that socialism is still unpopular, but the fact is that some democratic socialists are polling pretty well. Sen. Bernie Sanders has great image numbers, and even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is doing reasonably well despite being a boogeywoman for Republicans. And conservative commentator Meghan McCain thinks that if Democrats nominate someone who can speak to economic issues like democratic socialist New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Republicans will have a “huge problem”.
So, it seems like criticizing candidates as socialists and communists might not be the silver bullet that Trump thinks it is. Maybe it’s time for Republicans to start listening to the concerns of American voters and come up with some real solutions to the problems facing our economy.
