Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about a seaplane that made an emergency landing off the coast of Washington, and I’ve got to say, it’s a miracle everyone on board is accounted for. A Kenmore Air seaplane carrying 11 people, including a pilot and 10 passengers, was forced to make an emergency landing near Sucia Island in the San Juan Islands, prompting a massive search and rescue operation. I mean, can you imagine being on a plane that’s experiencing some kind of emergency and having to land in the water? It’s just terrifying to think about.
The US Coast Guard told CNN that all 11 people on board have been accounted for, and four people were taken to hospitals with serious injuries. One of the injured passengers was even transported in critical condition, according to San Juan County Sheriff Eric Peter. The victims’ injuries range from head injuries to broken bones and lacerations, which is just heartbreaking.
The cause of the emergency landing is still unknown, and I’m sure the investigation will reveal more information in the coming days. A Kenmore Air spokesperson told CNN affiliate KING that the floatplane took off from Lake Union in Seattle and was heading to Roche Harbor, about 100 miles northwest, when it went down around 45 minutes after take-off. The US Coast Guard received initial reports around 5:25 p.m. local time and immediately launched search and rescue assets, alongside the US Navy, Canadian Coast Guard, and local agencies.
It’s amazing to think about how quickly the rescue operation was launched, and I’m sure it was a huge relief for the passengers and their families. Two of the injured passengers were taken to a hospital in Bellingham, while two others were transported to a hospital in Seattle. Seven additional passengers were taken to a US Coast Guard base for further evaluation, which is just a precautionary measure, but still, it’s a lot to take in.
Kenmore Air CEO David Gudgel released a statement saying that the company is grateful everyone on board has been accounted for, and their immediate focus is ensuring the passengers and pilot receive the care and support they need. He also said that Kenmore Air is fully cooperating with the investigating authorities and will continue providing verified information as it becomes available.
It’s just amazing how these rescue operations come together, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this story in the coming days. In the meantime, I’m just glad everyone is safe, and that’s all that really matters. And on that note, I’m going to go refill my coffee cup, because, wow, what a story. The fact that everyone on board is safe is just the best news, and I’m sure we can all agree on that.
