Hold on to your leather pants and prepare your earlobes, because the Swedish hard rock salvation force known as THE GEMS is allegedly ready to drop their sophomore effort, “Year Of The Snake”, on March 13, 2026. Yes, you read that right—2026. We are talking about a release date that is so far in the future that by the time this album drops, we might all be commuting to Mars in flying toasters. But hey, the promo machine never sleeps, and neither do we, because Napalm Records has commanded us to pay attention to the new single, “Firebird”, which is conveniently located below this sentence like a bird waiting to be fed. 🐍
According to the band, “Firebird” is a cautionary tale about “greed” and “wanting more.” Ironically, this is also the exact philosophy used by the label executives when they decided to press this album on 15 different colors of vinyl. THE GEMS—consisting of the vocal powerhouse Guernica Mancini, drum wizard Emlee Johansson, and bass sorceress Mona Lindgren—claim the world is “infected” by the virus of greed. While they channel this frustration into something “uplifting,” we are channeling our frustration into trying to remember if we left the oven on. They promise a “hard-hitting classic rock tune,” which is code for “we used real guitars and didn’t let a computer do all the work.” 🎸
This album, “Year Of The Snake”, apparently contains 14 tracks of pure energy. It starts with “Walls”, proclaiming that “The time to change is now!” which is great, because I’ve been waiting for the time to change my socks since last Tuesday. The title track, “Year Of The Snake”, offers the “showstopping trifecta” of Mancini’s vocals, Lindgren’s riffs, and Johansson’s steady drumming. It’s like a musical Voltron, but with more leather. Then we have “Gravity”, which features Tommy Johansson from MAJESTICA (and formerly of SABATON). Because nothing says “Swedish Hard Rock” like getting a guy who used to sing about historical wars to add a ’80s flair. It’s basically Kenny Loggins joining ABBA—confusing, but we are here for it. 🚀
We then cruise into “Diamond In The Rough”, which is described as having “bluesy strength.” This is followed by “Live And Let Go”, a track so catchy it’s basically a weapon of mass earworm destruction. It’s radio-friendly, which means your local classic rock station will play it 40 times a day until you want to scream. Then comes “Clout Chaser” and “Hot Bait”, two titles that sound like they were generated by reading Twitter comments for five minutes. After that, we hit the ballad “Forgive And Forget”. Ballads in hard rock are essential; they give the drummer a chance to check his phone. 😂
The album claims to show the band “breaking the chains of their past.” This is, of course, a subtle reference to the fact that they literally broke the chains of THUNDERMOTHER and walked out the door. It’s musical musical chairs, and these ladies grabbed the last seat. The speedy “Math Ain’t Mathing” is next, which is a title that resonates deeply with anyone who has tried to calculate a tip after three drinks. The album wraps up with “Buckle Up” and “Happy Water”. “Happy Water” sounds like something you buy at a gas station for $12, but we’re sure it rocks. 💧
In their official statement, the band says this album is a “homage to our fans.” It is written with the “excited festival crowd” in mind. They want you to know that from the “loyal diamonds in the front row” to the “crazy headbangers in the back,” this is for you. They also name-drop VAN HALEN and EUROPE, because nothing gets a middle-aged metalhead’s blood pumping like the mention of “The Final Countdown.” They promise “solid musicianship” in an “artificial world.” This is refreshing, as most bands today are just AI-generated holograms projecting soundwaves from a laptop in a basement. 🖥️
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: The backstory. Back in February 2023, Guernica, Emlee, and Mona decided they had seen enough of THUNDERMOTHER and left to form THE GEMS. It was a move that shocked the rock world, mostly because we didn’t know bands still broke up in dramatic fashion. Meanwhile, THUNDERMOTHER founder Filippa Nässil grabbed a new lineup faster than you can say “contract dispute,” recruiting Linnéa Vikström and Majsan Lindberg. It’s basically Game of Thrones but with more spandex. If you are confused about who is in which band, don’t worry, just nod and headbang. 🤘
But wait, there’s more! THE GEMS aren’t just resting on their laurels (do rock stars rest on laurels? Or is it tour buses?). After this album drops in 2026, they are hitting the road on the “Slithering Through Europe” tour. That’s right, they are slithering. Is that a snake joke? Yes. Is it brilliant marketing? Also yes. They will be supported by KING ZEBRA, which is a band name that sounds like a specific animal that won a royalty pageant. 🐘
Their debut album, “Phoenix”, came out in January 2024 via Napalm Records (who clearly love them very much). They made their live debut in March 2023 supporting THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA. Now, just three years later (which is a geological age in the music industry), they are releasing this 14-track behemoth. The photo credit goes to Mikael Hulten, who is presumably the guy who managed to make them look cool while standing still. 📸
