Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest drama on the House floor, and let me tell you, it’s a doozy. Speaker Mike Johnson nearly lost control of the House floor, again, because of a group of disgruntled conservatives. I mean, can you blame them? It’s like they’re trying to make the Democrats look like the adults in the room. Then, a pair of Democrats, Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, stepped in to help the Republicans out. Because, you know, that’s exactly what you do when your opponents are struggling – you lend a hand.
I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that these two Democrats crossed party lines or that they did it to help pass a bill that supports lobstermen. I mean, who doesn’t love a good lobster roll? But seriously, Golden said he voted for the rule because it paved the way for a vote on his bill to protect Maine lobstermen from costly regulations. Bless their hearts, they’re just trying to do what’s best for their constituents.
But, of course, not everyone is happy about this. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is “disappointed” in the two Democrats who voted with the Republicans. He said they “blindsided the entire caucus and created a significant breach of trust.” Yikes, that sounds like a pretty big deal. Jeffries also said it’s “under discussion” whether the two lawmakers will face repercussions. I’m sure they’re shaking in their boots.
Golden, on the other hand, seems pretty unapologetic about his vote. He said his constituents don’t care about the “team sports of Congressional procedure.” Fair point, I guess. But, across the caucus, Democrats are arguing that the defection prevented a massive and embarrassing defeat for Republicans. I mean, it’s not like they’re trying to make the Republicans look good or anything.
It’s all just a big game of politics, folks. Multiple conservatives were blocking their party leaders’ plans for the floor this week because they’re protesting a separate move to pass a stopgap funding bill. And, of course, there are the usual disagreements about things like “mass surveillance” and immigration. You can’t make this stuff up.
In the end, it’s all just a big mess. But hey, at least the lobstermen are happy. As I finish my coffee, I’m left thinking that maybe, just maybe, we should all just take a step back and remember what we’re really fighting for. But, let’s be real, that’s not going to happen anytime soon. So, we’ll just keep on watching the drama unfold, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll get a few more laughs out of it.
