Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. New Jersey’s governor, Mikie Sherrill, is calling on her lieutenant governor, Dale Caldwell, to resign by Friday. Apparently, a law firm hired by her office found that Caldwell behaved inappropriately around women. I mean, who hasn’t had a bad day at the office, right? But seriously, the report says he made some pretty questionable comments, including telling a staffer that “you young women are looking for young sperm.” Yeah, that’s not exactly the kind of thing you want to hear from your boss.
I’m reading through this article, and I’m thinking to myself, “What’s going on in New Jersey?” The report found that Caldwell violated the state’s policy prohibiting discrimination in the workplace. He’s also accused of breaking ethics rules by trying to get a promotion for a state employee he was dating. Now, I’m not saying that’s necessarily wrong, but it’s definitely not a good look. And let’s not forget the seven ticketed events where he reportedly brought guests without paying for them. I mean, who doesn’t love a free ticket, right?
Caldwell’s lawyer, Thomas Calcagni, is disputing the allegations, saying the investigation was one-sided and didn’t include necessary due process. He’s also saying that Caldwell didn’t make that crazy comment about women wanting sperm. But the report says otherwise, and it’s got some pretty specific details. I’m not a lawyer, but it sounds like Caldwell’s got some ‘splainin’ to do.
The report also found that Caldwell recommended a promotion for his romantic partner, which is definitely a no-no. His lawyer says she was qualified for the job, but still, it’s not a good idea to mix business and pleasure. And let’s not forget the part where he brought guests to events without paying for them. I mean, I’ve done that at a wedding or two, but I’m not a lieutenant governor.
I’m reading through all these allegations, and I’m thinking, “What’s the deal with this guy?” He’s a Methodist pastor, for crying out loud! You’d think he’d be a little more… reverent. But I guess nobody’s perfect, right? The governor is calling for his resignation, saying his “ethical lapses” are a problem. And honestly, it’s hard to argue with that.
As I’m finishing up this article, I’m thinking, “Well, that’s a wrap, folks.” Caldwell’s got until Friday to resign, and if he doesn’t, who knows what’ll happen. Maybe he’ll get impeached, maybe he’ll just get sidelined. Either way, it’s definitely not a good day to be Dale Caldwell. And as I’m putting down my coffee cup, I’m thinking, “You can’t make this stuff up.” Only in politics, folks, only in politics.
