Emmys Ditch Broadcast TV for Slightly Less Ad-Infested Pastures

Emmys Ditch Broadcast TV for Slightly Less Ad-Infested Pastures

The Emmy Awards are making a big move, folks, and I’m not just talking about the outfits on the red carpet. According to CNN, the ceremony is ditching its traditional broadcast television home and heading to Amazon Prime Video in 2027. I almost spilled my coffee reading this one – who would have thought that the Emmys would be streaming on Prime Video? It’s the end of an era, I suppose, as the show will no longer be rotating among the major broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. I mean, it’s not like I’m going to miss watching it on TV or anything, but still, it’s a change.

The new deal is for six years, and it starts in September 2027. The best part? Viewers will be able to watch the Emmys for free, without a Prime Video subscription. I guess that’s one way to get more people to tune in – make it free and hope they stick around. The Television Academy is clearly excited about the move, with chair Cris Abrego saying that “television has never been more global, and the Emmys should be a celebration that the world can share.” Yeah, because what’s more global than a bunch of rich celebrities giving each other awards?

The move is a big deal, folks, as it ends a broadcast network run that stretches back to 1955. That’s a long time, and I’m sure some people are going to miss watching the Emmys on traditional TV. But hey, progress, right? The final audience numbers for the 2026 Emmys showed 6.8 million viewers, which is down 10% from the previous year. Maybe this move will help boost those numbers – or maybe people will just find other things to watch on their phones.

The partnership between Amazon and the Television Academy is supposed to include new ways for fans to engage with the show throughout the year, but they didn’t detail those plans. I’m sure it’ll be something exciting, like a social media campaign or a bunch of behind-the-scenes content. The agreement gives Prime Video another big live event, which is important as streaming platforms compete for viewers. I mean, it’s not like they’re just trying to keep up with YouTube or anything – oh wait, that’s exactly what they’re doing.

The Oscars are also making a similar move, leaving ABC for YouTube in 2029. And let’s not forget the Grammy Awards, which will be carried by Disney across ABC, Hulu, and Disney+ starting next year. It’s a brave new world out there, folks, and traditional TV is just going to have to adapt. So, to sum it all up, the Emmys are moving to Prime Video, and it’s a big change. But hey, at least we’ll still be able to watch rich celebrities give each other awards – and that’s what really matters, right? I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and enjoying the show. 🙄
