Saudi Arabia Gets New F-35 Jets Because Peace Is Overrated

Saudi Arabia Gets New F-35 Jets Because Peace Is Overrated

The Trump administration has just announced that it’s approved a potential multi-billion dollar sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, because what’s a few billion dollars between friends, right? I mean, it’s not like we’re talking about a small amount of money here – we’re talking about $24.3 billion. That’s a lot of zeros, folks. The US State Department says this sale will “support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States” and improve Saudi Arabia’s “capability to deter current and future threats”. Sure, because nothing says “deterrent” like a bunch of fancy fighter jets.

So, Saudi Arabia wants to buy 48 of these fancy jets, plus 49 engines, because you can never have too many engines, right? The State Department says this sale will not alter the military balance in the region, but I’m not so sure about that. I mean, if Saudi Arabia gets its hands on these advanced stealth fighters, it’s going to give them a pretty significant edge over their neighbors. But hey, what do I know? I’m just a guy drinking coffee and reading the news.

The US has a policy of ensuring that Israel maintains a “qualitative military edge” in the region, which basically means that Israel gets to have the best toys. But now, it looks like Saudi Arabia is going to get some pretty fancy toys too. I’m not sure how this is all going to play out, but it’s definitely going to be interesting. The Saudi-Houthi conflict has been escalating, with Houthi drones and missiles attacking Saudi oil complexes and disrupting operations. It’s a mess, folks.

The Houthis have been making some significant gains in recent weeks, including a rapid advancement on coastal assets along the Red Sea. Yemeni generals are pleading for backup air support from their ally Saudi Arabia, but so far, it’s been nowhere to be found. Iran’s effective control of the Strait of Hormuz and its tightening grip on the Bab al-Mandeb Strait is threatening to push oil prices even higher, just in time for the US midterm elections. It’s all very convenient, isn’t it?

The State Department says this proposed sale will improve Saudi Arabia’s air-to-air and air-to-ground self-defense capability, which is just a fancy way of saying that they’ll be able to shoot down more stuff. Saudi Arabia has been interested in these fighter jets for a while now, and they even made a direct appeal to President Donald Trump back in 2025. Trump, of course, was happy to oblige, because he loves making deals, especially when it comes to arms sales.

In 2025, the US approved an arms package worth nearly $142 billion for Saudi Arabia, which was described as the “largest defense cooperation agreement” in history. Because what’s a few billion dollars here and there, right? The F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter is considered the world’s most advanced fighter jet, and it’s also the most expensive weapons program in US history. But hey, you get what you pay for, right?

So, there you have it, folks. The US is selling a bunch of fancy fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, and everyone’s happy. Well, except for maybe the people who are going to be on the receiving end of those fighter jets. But that’s a whole different story. In conclusion, it’s all about the benjamins, baby – $24.3 billion to be exact. I’m just going to sit back, sip my coffee, and watch the drama unfold. 🙄
