Michele Tafoya, the Republican Senate nominee in Minnesota, was asked about her past criticism of the state and whether she was embarrassed by Minnesota in a local radio interview earlier this month. And let me tell you, her response was something else. She asked, “If I were embarrassed to be from Minnesota, would I be running for the United States Senate to represent Minnesota?” before adding, “I have never said that.” Bless their hearts, it seems like she’s trying to have it both ways.
But, as it often does, the internet had other plans. A since-deleted tweet from 2023 uncovered by CNN’s KFile showed Tafoya saying exactly the opposite – that she was embarrassed to say she lived in Minnesota. She even went so far as to say the state had “gone so far left it’s amazing any of the snow still sticks.” You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
It turns out, this wasn’t just a one-time slip-up. Tafoya repeatedly expressed her desire to leave Minnesota, praising Florida as a model of conservative governance and even calling herself a “part-time Floridian.” She told followers at least four separate times that she planned to leave the state. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we have a Senate candidate who’s running on a platform of criticism against the state she’s trying to represent.
Tafoya is facing off against Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan in November, and Republicans are hoping to flip the open seat. Her campaign is built around criticism of Minnesota’s political leadership, promising a “Minnesota comeback.” But it’s hard to take that seriously when she’s spent years trashing the state and talking about how much she wants to leave.
In a statement, Tafoya said, “I hear from Minnesotans every day that they are fed up and won’t be staying forever if we can’t turn this state around. I love Minnesota and I got into this race to fight for it.” But her past comments tell a different story. She’s described herself as a “Florida woman” and praised Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis while highlighting the state’s policies as a model for other states.
As I’m reading through all this, I’m thinking, what’s going on here? Is Tafoya just trying to pander to her base, or does she really believe what she’s saying? Either way, it’s not a great look for someone who’s trying to represent the state of Minnesota in the Senate.
In the end, it’s up to the people of Minnesota to decide whether they want to elect someone who’s spent years criticizing their state. But one thing’s for sure – this campaign is going to be a wild ride. And I’ll be here, sipping my coffee and watching it all go down with a mixture of amusement and confusion. After all, who needs reality TV when you have politics, right?
