Well, folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is at it again, holding court on the White House drive with tech moguls, and I’m not sure what’s more surprising – the fact that he’s trying to rebrand AI as “SI” (which apparently stands for “Super”) or that he thinks this is going to calm everyone’s nerves about the potential risks of this technology. I mean, come on, Trump’s answer to voters who worry that AI will take their jobs is that these installations are “going to be very popular” and will make everyone rich? Bless their hearts.
It seems like Trump’s meeting with these tech leaders was a prime opportunity for him to show some presidential leadership, especially given that many of them have been pleading for government regulation. But instead, he just gave us a rebranding effort. I’m not sure what’s more troubling – the fact that Trump thinks this is a solution or that he genuinely believes that the AI industry can police itself.
Now, I’m no expert, but it seems to me that if 75% of Americans are viewing the growth of AI with fear and concern, maybe we should be doing something about it. And what’s with Trump’s insistence that the industry can regulate itself? Has he seen the way these tech companies operate? It’s like he thinks they’re all a bunch of saints or something.
Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and I have to agree. The fact that Trump is so against regulation is pretty concerning, especially when you consider that other industries, like civil aviation, have strict safety measures in place to protect the public. Why should AI be any different?
I guess what’s really at stake here is Trump’s personal fortune, which is highly exposed to the tech industry. But let’s be real, the nation and the world have a lot more at stake than Trump’s midterm election fate and legacy. If he gets this one wrong, it could have catastrophic consequences.
In conclusion, Trump’s gamble on AI is a huge one, and I’m not sure he’s thought it through. His blasé attitude towards the potential risks of AI is worrying, to say the least. And let’s not forget, this is a president who once argued that if we stopped testing for Covid-19, we wouldn’t have any more cases. So, I’m not holding my breath that he’s going to get this one right. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up – and with Trump, you never know what’s going to happen next.
