Breaking news: WARRANT’s “Cherry Pie” is back and better than ever, and we’re not just saying that because we’re stuck in the 80s 🤣. In a recent interview with Australia’s Today show, guitarist Erik Turner talked about how the band’s hit song is reaching a whole new generation thanks to its appearance in the Prime Video series “Off Campus” 📺. Because, you know, what’s more rock and roll than a college soap opera? 🤷♂️
We’re not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that “Cherry Pie” is still a thing or that Erik Turner’s wife has friends who actually watch TV 📺. But hey, we’re not complaining, because when Hannah Wells breaks out into a karaoke performance of “Cherry Pie” in episode three, it’s definitely one of the show’s most talked-about moments 🎤. And by talked-about, we mean everyone’s like “wait, what’s ‘Cherry Pie’ and why is it still a thing?” 🤔
Asked if he knew “Cherry Pie” was going to be used in “Off Campus” before the episode aired, Erik said: “I did not know they were gonna use it. My wife’s phone started blowing up. All her friends were texting her. They’re, like, ‘Oh, we just heard ‘Cherry Pie’ on this TV show ‘Off Campus’ and all that, so we started watching it 📺.” And by “we started watching it,” we’re pretty sure he means “we started watching it and immediately regretted our life choices” 🤦♂️.
But seriously, Erik is stoked that the producers and actors are having fun with the song, and who can blame them? It’s a classic 🎸. And by classic, we mean it’s a song that’s been stuck in our heads for decades and we can’t get it out 🤯. Asked if WARRANT is seeing a huge spike in streams and downloads due to the song’s appearance in “Off Campus”, Erik said: “I think so. We normally put out a video or something, maybe it gets 20, 40,000 streams. These streams we’re putting out are, like, two million streams 📈.” Wow, that’s a lot of streams, almost as many as the number of times we’ve heard “Cherry Pie” on the radio 📻.
Erik was also asked if he sees “Cherry Pie”‘s inclusion in “Off Campus” as “part of a resurgence in hair metal” 🤘. He responded: “I don’t know if it’s a resurgence. We play, like, 50 shows a year 🎸. That’s still happening 🙌.” Because, you know, what’s more rock and roll than playing the same 50 shows every year for decades? 🤣. But hey, we’re not complaining, because if it means we get to hear “Cherry Pie” one more time, we’re all for it 🎉.
In other news, original WARRANT singer Jani Lane (aka the “Cherry Pie” guy 🎂) back in 2006 said he hated the song 🙅♂️. But then in 2007, he took it back, saying he was just having a bad day 😔. Because, you know, who hasn’t had a bad day and written a song that becomes a hit single 🤷♂️? Lane passed away in 2011, but his legacy lives on through “Cherry Pie” 🎸. And by legacy, we mean the fact that we still can’t get the song out of our heads 🤯.
So there you have it, folks, “Cherry Pie” is back and better than ever 🎉. Or at least, that’s what we’re told 🙄. But hey, if it means we get to see more of Hannah Wells’ karaoke performances, we’re all for it 🎤. Just don’t expect us to start singing along, because let’s be real, we’re all still stuck in the 80s 🕰️.
