Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn pleaded not guilty in Washington, DC, Superior Court to damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. I mean, who doesn’t love a good story about a Reflecting Pool controversy? The pool, which is a popular tourist spot, had been renovated with a $14 million restoration that added blue sealant to the bottom. However, the sealant had been peeling extensively, and algae was plaguing the pool. Hearn, 67, allegedly contributed to the damage by peeling up two square feet of the blue liner.
The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, if convicted. I’m no lawyer, but that seems like a pretty steep punishment for damaging a pool. Hearn’s attorneys indicated he will challenge the legality of the case extensively before a trial. The US Attorney’s Office has already charged others with property destruction accusations that are less serious than Hearn’s. It’s interesting to note that three other people accused of damaging the Reflecting Pool pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of destruction of property.
After the brief court appearance, a large group of Hearn’s supporters gathered outside the courthouse carrying signs calling him a hero. At least one carried a life preserver, which I found kind of amusing. Norm Eisen, another attorney for Hearn, said outside the courthouse, “If Mr. Hearn can be charged with a felony for touching the Reflecting Pool, every American is at risk.” The crowd seemed to agree, with one woman yelling, “That’s right!” Eisen also stated, “We have confidence in our justice system to see through this misuse of government power.”
As Hearn left the courthouse, he smiled and raised his fist while supporters cheered his name. It’s clear that he has a lot of support, and this case has sparked a lot of debate. The Trump administration has been criticized for its handling of the situation, with some accusing them of overreacting. Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat, called Hearn’s arrest and charges “Kafkaesque” and “Orwellian.” He also stated that Hearn “would never” desecrate or vandalize a federal landmark.
The Reflecting Pool has been plagued by problems, including algae blooms and a chipping bottom. Crews began draining the pool over the weekend to make repairs, according to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. This is the second time in three months that the pool has been drained. It’s clear that the situation is complex, and there are many different opinions on what should happen next.
In conclusion, the case of David Hearn and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is a fascinating one. With a potential 10-year prison sentence on the line, it’s no wonder that Hearn’s supporters are rallying around him. As the case continues to develop, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. And who knows, maybe the Reflecting Pool will finally get the repairs it needs. After all, you can’t have a national landmark looking like a neglected swimming pool, right? 🙄
