Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is now holding Canada responsible for the wildfire smoke hovering over much of the Midwestern and eastern United States. Because, you know, it’s always someone else’s fault. He’s vowed to call Prime Minister Mark Carney and suggest that the “cost of this pollution” could be added to the tariffs Canada is already paying. I mean, because tariffs are the answer to everything, right?
So, it seems that Trump wrote a post on Truth Social, because that’s a thing now, saying that Canada is not properly maintaining their forests and brush, and that’s why we’re getting all this “filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air” in the US. He even used the phrase “Willful Negligence” – bless their hearts. I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how international relations work.
More than 100 million people in 18 states and the District of Columbia are under air quality alerts, with “very unhealthy” and “hazardous” air quality stretching from northeast Minnesota to southeast Virginia. That’s no joke, folks. But, of course, Trump has to make it about Canada and tariffs. I mean, why not, right? It’s not like we have better things to worry about.
Trump said he’s going to call the Prime Minister to find out what they’re going to do about it, because apparently, it’s all Canada’s problem. And, of course, he’s going to add the cost of the pollution to the tariffs Canada is already paying. Because, you know, that’s exactly how diplomacy works. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’re all supposed to be worried about Canada’s forest management.
Tensions are already thick between the two countries, and this isn’t helping. After the Supreme Court ruled that Trump couldn’t use emergency powers to levy tariffs, he’s been using other statutes that require investigations and public comment periods. It’s all very complicated, but basically, Trump really likes tariffs and wants to use them to punish Canada.
Canada, however, has long been a thorn in Trump’s side, and he’s saved some of his highest tariffs for America’s northern neighbor. He’s accused them of unfair lumber trade and stealing US auto jobs. Despite all this, Canada has been largely insulated by the USMCA trade pact that Trump himself negotiated in his first term. But, of course, the Trump administration declined to renew it earlier this month, because why make things easy, right?
In conclusion, it’s just another day in the world of Trump and tariffs. The US and Canada are having some issues, and Trump is blaming Canada for the wildfire smoke and threatening to add more tariffs. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. It’s all just a big game of international relations, and we’re all just along for the ride. And, of course, I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and shaking my head. 😒
