Oh boy, are you guys ready for some exciting news? I mean, I’m not, but I’ll tell you anyway 🙄. Acclaimed U.K.-based session drummer Darby Todd has shared a drum-cam video of him performing “Caught In A Mosh” with ANTHRAX live at this year’s Rock Imperium festival on July 4, 2026, in Cartagena, Spain. Because, you know, the world was just missing that. Todd was filling in for longtime ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante, who sat out nearly a dozen of the band’s shows in Europe in late June and early July after injuring his right hand. Yeah, because drumming is hard, folks.
So, let’s get into the juicy details. Todd previously sat behind the kit for ANTHRAX’s May 23 concert at the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens (OAKA) in Athens, Greece as the support act for IRON MAIDEN. Charlie was unable to make the Athens gig due to his touring commitments with PANTERA, which played a show in Frankfurt, Germany on May 24 as the support act for METALLICA. Because, you know, PANTERA is a thing again, and we’re all just thrilled about it 🙃.
In a message accompanying his YouTube release of the “Caught In A Mosh” video, Darby wrote: “My final show filling in on drums for ANTHRAX while Charlie Benante took some needed rest for his hand injury, supporting IRON MAIDEN in Spain. Here’s what ‘Caught In A Mosh’ looked like from behind the kit — one hell of a way to finish an incredible run with an incredible band. Thanks to ANTHRAX and their entire crew for having me.” Aww, thanks for the drum-cam video, Darby, I guess.

In addition to touring the world with Devin Townsend, Darby has played with THE DARKNESS, Martin Barre, Alan Price, Gary Moore, Kee Marcello (EUROPE), Joe Lynn Turner (RAINBOW), Carl Verheyen, Robert Plant, Robben Ford, Paul Gilbert, and many others. Wow, that’s a lot of names. I’m exhausted just reading that list. Darby is as comfortable playing jazz in a small jazz club as he is playing rock in an arena. Because, you know, versatility is key when you’re a drummer.
ANTHRAX’s New Album: Because You’ve Been Waiting
When not touring, Darby can be found in his London-based studio remote recording for artists and bands around the world as well as doing a limited amount of teaching. He holds both U.K. and USA passports, which makes working in America simple. Because, you know, who needs a social life when you can just drum all day?
ANTHRAX will release its long-awaited twelfth full-length studio album, “Cursum Perficio”, on September 18 via Megaforce in the U.S. and Nuclear Blast in Europe. It marks the band’s first record in ten years since 2016’s “For All Kings”, which debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. Wow, ten years, that’s a long time. I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait… or not.
Benante joined ANTHRAX in 1983, prior to the recording of the band’s debut album, “Fistful Of Metal”, and has been the band’s drummer ever since. He is known for having a very fast double-kick technique and his work with the 1980s hardcore/metal project STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH (S.O.D.) is credited with having set the template for extreme metal and hardcore blast beats. He is also an accomplished guitarist, having written the majority of the music for ANTHRAX. Along with his musician duties, Benante is a graphic artist and has created many of ANTHRAX’s album covers and T-shirt designs. Because, you know, being a drummer and guitarist isn’t enough, you have to be a graphic artist too.
