Capcom Thought About Ruining Resident Evil With Open World and Online Nonsense

**Oh, honey, buckle up buttercups! Resident Evil Requiem, or as I like to call it, “Capcom’s Identity Crisis: The Game,” is supposedly going back to its horror roots. But guess what? They almost screwed it up worse than that time I tried to bake a cake. Turns out, Capcom was sniffing glue and dreaming of an online game and, wait for it, an OPEN WORLD game! 🤣 Like, seriously? Did they forget what made Resident Evil, Resident Evil?**

After a Capcom Spotlight presentation (more like a “Spotlight on Our Mistakes” presentation, amirite?), they blessed us with developer diary videos. Because nothing screams “confidence” like admitting you had no clue what you were doing. A brave X user, bless their soul, posted a clip from the diary.

“You might have heard some of the rumors. Things like an online Resident Evil, or an open-world Resident Evil, which we spent some time experimenting with,” producer Masachika Kawata says. 🙄

Oh, we heard the rumors, Kawata. We heard the whispers of your impending doom! The earliest rumors about Resident Evil 9 were that it would be an open world game – with Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine as dual protagonists! 👯‍♀️ Because what screams horror more than two action heroes casually strolling through a zombie apocalypse? At least one of those rumors was true for a hot minute, with Kawata saying, “But in the end, although we had some interesting concepts, we realized that it wasn’t what fans wanted to see or play. So we went back to the drawing board, and created what led to Resident Evil: Requiem.”

Oh, so you *listened* to the fans? Color me shocked! 😲 It’s not like we’ve been screaming for a return to classic horror for, oh, I don’t know, the last decade? And about those rumors of Leon being the protagonist? Turns out, they considered it, but decided against it because Leon is a “bad match” for horror. 🤣😂🤣😂 He’d never get scared by a bucket falling! Oh, the humanity!

In terms of Requiem’s setting and not opting for an open world, art director Tomonori Takano also commented on what returning to Raccoon City means after the last few games had more rural locales.

“Previous titles were often set in rural areas with lots of nature,” Takano noted. “This time it is more focused on the urban environment. And there are many scenarios that are set as a modern drama, including Raccoon City,” Takano says. 🌳➡️🏙️ Because nothing says “fresh and exciting” like revisiting the same city for the fifth time! But hey, at least it’s not another spooky farm, right?

Despite the fact that Requiem releases in just over seven months, Capcom is still being coy on telling us any more about the game outside these interviews. We’ve only seen a couple actual minutes of gameplay, and it certainly seems odd the development team is so insistent on talking about Leon. 🤔 Is he in the game or not?! Make up your mind!

Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Mark your calendars, folks, because this could either be the best or the worst Resident Evil game ever. Or, you know, just another Resident Evil game. Who am I kidding? 🤷‍♀️
