OH. MY. GOD. FOO FIGHTERS, the band that DEFINITELY needed another drummer (said no one ever 🙄), apparently played their first concert with some dude named Ilan Rubin on Saturday night (September 13) at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California. I mean, who even goes to San Luis Obispo? Sounds like a town your grandma lives in. 👵
Dave Grohl, bless his heart, decided to announce this “surprise” show on Friday night (September 12). Surprise! As if anyone cares anymore. It was at some tiny venue that holds, like, 900 people. Probably less if you count Dave‘s ego. 🎤 The show was to unveil Rubin, the former NINE INCH NAILS drummer. Wait, someone actually left NINE INCH NAILS to join the FOO FIGHTERS? That’s…a choice. 🤔
Tickets went on sale at 8 a.m. Saturday. People were told to line up no earlier than 7 a.m. because apparently, they thought they were selling iPhones. 📱 Only the first 500 people to line up got tickets before the show sold out… so the next 400 lined up just for the fun of it, I guess. All ticket sales were in person, and you HAD to show your physical ID and a credit card. Cash? Contactless payments? Nope! This is 2024, guys; get with the times! 🕰️ You also had to enter the venue with the person who bought your ticket, or your ticket was “forfeited.” Talk about draconian rules. Bet there were a lot of arguments that night. 🤣
Before this “historic” concert, the FOO FIGHTERS hadn’t been on the road since September 2024. I’m sure the world was just holding its breath waiting for their return. 🙄
FOO FIGHTERS are next playing in Jakarta, Indonesia on October 2. Jakarta? Really? I bet Dave can’t even spell Jakarta. They’ll also hit Singapore, Tokyo, and Osaka. Sounds like someone’s trying to rack up those frequent flyer miles. ✈️ And then Mexico City on November 14. Because nothing says rock and roll like playing the same cities every other band plays. 😴
The big reveal of Rubin as their new drummer happened in July. Groundbreaking stuff, guys. Absolutely earth-shattering. 🌎
Oh, and Rubin was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with NINE INCH NAILS in 2020. Good for him, I guess. Still doesn’t make him Taylor Hawkins. 🤷
So, Rubin is replacing Josh Freese, who got the boot in May. Fired! Can you believe it? 🔥 Apparently, Freese wasn’t cool enough anymore. And get this: Freese used to be the NAILS‘ touring drummer. It’s like a drummer swap meet! 🔄
Freese, who filled in after the late Taylor Hawkins, posted on Instagram that the FOO FIGHTERS called him to say they were “going in a different direction.” No reason given, of course. Probably because the real reason is too embarrassing to admit. 🙊
Rubin played with NINE INCH NAILS from 2008 to 2009, and then again from 2013 until…well, until he jumped ship to the FOO FIGHTERS. He’s also in Tom DeLonge‘s band ANGELS & AIRWAVES. So basically, he’s a drummer for hire. 🥁
FOO FIGHTERS‘ 11th album, “But Here We Are”, came out in June 2023. Did anyone actually listen to it? 🤔
Let’s not forget about Hawkins, who tragically died in March 2022. Still the elephant in the room, right? 🐘
Hawkins was found dead in a hotel room in Colombia. No cause of death was announced, which is totally not suspicious at all. 🤫
Hawkins was the FOO FIGHTERS drummer for 25 years. He replaced William Goldsmith in 1997. Can you imagine being the original drummer who gets replaced? Ouch. 💔
The FOO FIGHTERS had two tribute concerts for Hawkins. So touching. So meaningful. So…overdone? 🙄 They raised money for charity, which is great, but let’s be real: it was also a good PR move. 💰
There were other tributes too, like at the Grammys and a drum circle. A drum circle! How…original. 🥁 And then 1,000 musicians played “My Hero.” I’m sure Hawkins would have loved that…or maybe he would have been rolling his eyes from above. 🙄
