DNA Proves Utah Man Not A Murderer After Only 30 Years

DNA Proves Utah Man Not A Murderer After Only 30 Years

Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about a case that’s just mind-boggling. A Utah judge has ordered a 71-year-old man, Douglas Stewart Carter, to be released on bail after he spent decades on death row for a 1985 killing. I mean, can you imagine being in prison for that long and then finding out that the DNA evidence doesn’t even match you? It’s just crazy. Carter was sentenced to death back in 1985 for murdering Eva Olesen, but now it seems like the whole case is falling apart.

The prosecution’s case against Carter was largely based on a confession that he claims was coerced, as well as testimony from two witnesses who said he bragged about the crime. But, as it turns out, those witnesses were given cash and gifts by the police, and they’ve since come forward to say they were told to lie in court. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. It’s like something out of a bad TV drama.

Carter’s defense team has been saying all along that the police and prosecutors mishandled the case, and it looks like they might be right. The Utah Supreme Court even ordered a new trial last year, citing “multiple instances of intentional misconduct” by the police and a prosecutor. And now, with the DNA evidence not matching Carter, it seems like the prosecution’s case is crumbling.

The victim’s family is still convinced that Carter was involved in the crime, but it’s hard to say for sure at this point. The case is just so messy, with all sorts of questionable testimony and evidence. I feel for the family, though – they just want justice for Eva, and they want to know what really happened.

The whole thing is just a big mess, and I’m not sure how it’s all going to play out. But one thing’s for sure – Douglas Stewart Carter is finally getting a chance to clear his name, and that’s something to be thankful for. As I finish up my coffee, I’m left wondering how many other cases out there might be like this one, with innocent people behind bars due to misconduct or faulty evidence. It’s a scary thought, folks.
