Another day, another rumor debunked, and yet the gaming industry’s favorite pastime – speculation – lives on. This time, it’s Disney’s alleged plans to buy out Epic Games, the behemoth behind Fortnite, that have been put to rest. At least, for now. Disney executive Dana Walden has come out to say that those conversations aren’t happening at the moment, but don’t worry, folks, they’re still BFFs with Epic, and that $1.5 billion investment for an equity stake is still very much alive and kicking.
As we’ve come to expect from the House of Mouse, their focus is on creating “transformational” games, because what’s more transformative than slapping a Disney logo on an existing IP and calling it a day? Walden boasted about the number of launches coming up in the next two years, which will supposedly demonstrate the value of this partnership. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Fortnite is still raking in the dough and Disney wants a bigger slice of that pie. The term “Entertainment Universe” was thrown around, which sounds like a fancy way of saying “we’re going to milk this cash cow for all it’s worth.”
The Partnership Perspective
The collaboration between Disney and Epic Games is nothing new, with previous tie-ins like Marvel and Star Wars in Fortnite, as well as a Disneyland collaboration that was probably a wild ride for the accountants involved. It’s no secret that Disney loves to spread its properties far and wide, with collaborations ranging from Pirates of the Caribbean to Toy Story. The latest announcement, however, is a doozy – a major tie-in with Avengers: Doomsday, coming to Fortnite with the start of Chapter 8. Because what’s more exciting than playing as your favorite superhero in a battle royale, right?
Epic’s Future Plans
With this partnership in full swing, it’s interesting to consider what’s next for Epic Games. Will they continue to churn out Fortnite-themed content, or will they explore other avenues? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – with Disney’s deep pockets backing them, the possibilities are endless. And by endless, I mean as endless as the number of microtransactions they can cram into a single game.
The Rumor Mill
Rumors of an acquisition may have been put to rest, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the speculation will continue. After all, in the world of gaming, where there’s smoke, there’s usually a ton of cash being thrown around. Disney’s denial of the rumors doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t happen in the future. Stranger things have happened, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that in the gaming industry, nothing is ever off the table – especially when it comes to lucrative deals and massive piles of cash.
And so, we’ll continue to watch this partnership with bated breath, waiting to see what other “transformational” experiences Disney and Epic Games have in store for us. In the meantime, I’ll be over here, eagerly anticipating the next big announcement, and the inevitable season pass, battle pass, and DLC that comes with it. Because, let’s be real, that’s just the circle of life in the gaming industry.
