In a shocking turn of events, Australian thrash metal pioneers MORTAL SIN have announced their return to the stage after a 15-year hiatus, and we’re still trying to process our emotions about it. Vocalist Mat Maurer spoke with Jerry Kurunen of Finland’s Rauta about the band’s plans, and it seems like they’re taking things slow. They’re going to release a best-of album, because who doesn’t love a good compilation, and they’re also going to put out a live album from their Keep It True festival set, which was recorded in April 2026 in Lauda-Königshofen, Germany. Oh, and they’ve got a desk tape of their 1989 show with METALLICA in Melbourne, because why not?

Maurer mentioned that the band has “loosely discussed” the possibility of a new studio album, but let’s be real, we’ve heard that before. They’ve got a new lineup, with original members Maurer and Andy Eftichiou (bass) joined by Nathan Shea (guitar), Ryan Huthnance (guitar), and George Delinicolis (drums) of LIVWIRE and BASTARDIZER. We’re not sure what to expect from this new iteration of the band, but we’re willing to give them a chance.

The Return of MORTAL SIN: A Thrash Metal Miracle?

MORTAL SIN played their first show in over 14 years on January 31, 2026, at the Froth & Fury festival in Adelaide, Australia. The band has been celebrating their 40-year anniversary, and it’s crazy to think that it’s been that long since they released their debut album “Mayhemic Destruction”. They’ve also been touring extensively, with shows in Australia, Europe, and even a few festival appearances, including Brutal Assault and Alcatraz. We’re not sure if they’re trying to make up for lost time or what, but it’s definitely exciting to see them back in action.

But let’s get real, folks. Writing a new album is hard, and Maurer even admitted that it’s the hardest thing for him. He said, “Writing, man, writing is the hardest thing. And I don’t know as a guitarist what it’s like to write. I don’t know if it just comes naturally to them, but for me, for lyrics, it’s, like, ‘Fuck.’ … Sometimes [ideas come quickly]. But other times, it can take weeks.” We feel you, Mat. We’ve all been there, staring at a blank page, trying to come up with something, anything, that doesn’t sound like complete garbage.

What’s Next for MORTAL SIN?

MORTAL SIN’s latest album, “Psychology Of Death”, was released in 2011, and it’s been a while since we’ve heard any new music from them. They’ve got a lot of catching up to do, but we’re hopeful that they’ll be able to deliver something worthy of their legacy. After all, they’ve been hailed as the next METALLICA, and they’ve even been inducted into the Kerrang! Heavy Metal Hall Of Fame. No pressure or anything.

As we wait for new music from MORTAL SIN, we can’t help but wonder what the future holds for the band. Will they be able to recapture the magic of their earlier days, or will they forge a new path? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – we’ll be watching with bated breath. Or not. We’re not really sure. 🤷‍♂️

In conclusion, MORTAL SIN is back, and we’re… well, we’re not really sure how to feel about it. Are we excited? Maybe. Are we skeptical? Definitely. But hey, at least they’re trying, right? 🎸🤘
