I’m sipping my coffee and reading about this lawsuit against the Trump administration, and folks, it’s a doozy. Apparently, the administration is being sued for allegedly sharing confidential information with the Iranian government about Iranian asylum seekers in the US. The lawsuit claims that this information sharing puts these individuals at risk of “persecution, torture, and death” if they’re deported back to Iran. I mean, that’s some serious stuff. The lawsuit was filed by Public Citizen on behalf of the Iranian American Legal Defense Fund, and it names some big names, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin.
The lawsuit says that many of these Iranian asylum seekers are pro-democracy protestors, members of religious minorities, or members of the LGBTQ community – people who would face some serious risks if they were forced to return to Iran. Now, I’m not a lawyer, but it seems to me that sharing confidential information about these individuals with the Iranian government would be a pretty big no-no. I mean, we’re talking about people’s lives here.
The State Department’s human rights report on Iran says that there are “significant human rights issues” in the country, which doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. And yet, the Trump administration has been carrying out deportation flights to remove dozens of Iranians from the US, including one as recently as January. The lawsuit claims that the US is working with the Iranian government to deport these individuals, and that’s just not right.
A DHS spokesperson said that the allegations of ICE sharing asylum application records with the Iranian government are “FALSE”, but the lawsuit claims that this information was shared during monthly meetings between ICE and Iranian government officials, as well as by mail. It also alleges that ICE has coordinated in-person meetings with Iranian government officials and dozens of Iranians in ICE custody, often without the consent of the detainees. That’s just not how we do things in this country, folks.
The plaintiffs are asking the court to stop the sharing of this confidential information and to declare the policy of doing so to be “unlawful”. They’re also asking the court to identify and notify asylum seekers whose information was shared with the Iranian government and to stop any deportations until this work is done. It’s a pretty reasonable ask, if you ask me.
The DHS spokesperson said that ICE is committed to ensuring that detained individuals have the opportunity to contact their consular post and that they facilitate consular access to detained individuals. But the lawsuit claims that this isn’t what’s happening, and that’s what’s got everyone so upset. I mean, we’re talking about people’s lives here, and it’s just not right to play fast and loose with that.
In conclusion, this lawsuit is a big deal, folks. It’s about the Trump administration’s alleged sharing of confidential information with the Iranian government, and the risks that poses to Iranian asylum seekers in the US. The plaintiffs are asking the court to step in and stop this information sharing, and to protect the rights of these individuals. And let’s be real, if the allegations in this lawsuit are true, it’s a pretty big scandal. So, I’ll be keeping an eye on this one, and I’m sure the rest of the country will be too. After all, as the saying goes, “you can’t make this stuff up” – and boy, is that true in this case.
