Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. It seems the Trump administration has been accused of abusing its power by Democratic lawmakers after officials admitted in a federal court filing that they recommended terminating several billion dollars in grants for clean-energy projects based solely on states’ “political identity” and whether President Donald Trump won the vote there in the 2024 election. I mean, who needs bipartisanship when you can just play politics with people’s livelihoods, right?
I’m reading through this article, and it’s like a never-ending saga of partisan politics. In a July 15 filing, officials said the Energy Department sent to the Office of Management and Budget a list of more than 600 grants it recommended be canceled from recipients in states where former Vice President Kamala Harris won the vote, and that have two senators that caucus with Democrats. Ultimately, the Office of Management and Budget terminated 284 grants in October 2025. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
It’s all part of Trump’s broader second-term push to seek retribution against perceived political opponents. Earlier this year, the administration tried to freeze $10 billion in funding for social services from five blue states before dropping that effort. And let’s not forget the time the Federal Emergency Management Agency released more than $5 billion in long-delayed disaster aid to states, but left out several Democratic-led states where Trump had clashed with governors. I guess you could say it’s all just a big game of political tit-for-tat.
The Department of Homeland Security denied politics played a role in the decision, but come on, folks, who are they kidding? It’s all about the politics. And now, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is calling DOE’s admission “unprecedented Trumpism and something we should never become numb to.” I think that’s a bit of an understatement, don’t you? Trump admits he’s ripping the rug out from under hardworking families so he can get revenge on the Americans who didn’t vote for him. It’s all about his ego, folks.
Maryland US Rep. Jamie Raskin said the Trump administration’s actions are a “deep betrayal of America,” and that the funds should be restored to blue states immediately. And Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur and Washington Sen. Patty Murray, Democrats who sit on the appropriations committee, said in a joint statement that “This is an astounding admission that the President and his team corruptly abused their power to kill good jobs and punish hard-working families because of their political views.” I think it’s safe to say that the Democrats are not happy about this one.
In conclusion, it’s all just a big mess of partisan politics. The Trump administration is playing games with people’s livelihoods, and the Democrats are calling them out on it. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a big ol’ controversy on our hands. But hey, at least it’s making for some interesting reading, right? 🙄
