“The Disinvited” Gets Rescued from the VHS Graveyard by Dark Star Pictures

Dark Star Pictures, bless their cotton socks, has decided to unleash upon the world a cinematic masterpiece – or, you know, another film – called The Disinvited. Directed by the visionary Devin Lawrence (who?), this psychological horror/thriller (eye roll) promises to be… something. They’re even gracing Los Angeles with an exclusive theatrical release this November, because who wouldn’t want to experience existential dread on the big screen? 🎭 Afterwards, they’ll be flinging it into the digital void for all of us to “enjoy.”

So, get this: The Disinvited, in its infinite wisdom, made its North American debut at the Dances With Films festival on June 21 in Hollywood. And guess what? It won the Audience Award for Best Picture! 🏆 (I’m sure the competition was just *fierce*). People are already calling it a “gripping narrative” and praising the “powerhouse performances.” Yeah, okay, I’ll believe it when I see it. 🤔

Apparently, this cinematic triumph is about some guy named Carl who crashes a wedding. 🥂 What starts as a noble attempt to reconnect with old pals quickly devolves into paranoia, betrayal, and humiliation. Sounds like every wedding I’ve ever been to, tbh. This supposedly hopeful desert weekend transforms into a “surreal, violent nightmare.” 🌵🔥 I’m sure it’s just *thrilling* stuff.

The film features the acting talents of Sam Daly (“The Office,” “Bel‑Air”) in what they’re calling a “career-defining role.” 🙄 Because, you know, that one episode of “The Office” clearly wasn’t his peak. He’s joined by Dani Reynolds, Ryan Vincent, and Alana Johnston, who I’m sure are all thrilled to be part of this potential train wreck. 🚂🔥 Produced by Matthew Mourgides, The Disinvited was apparently released in Brazil this past April, where it “garnered strong international praise.” 🇧🇷👏 Sure, Jan.

THE DISINVITED lures you in with the promise of a nostalgic reunion, then pulls the rug out in the most unsettling ways,” said Mike Repsch, President of Dark Star Pictures. “Equal parts intimate and unflinching, Devin Lawrence has crafted a slow-burn nightmare that feels both painfully relatable and impossible to look away from, and we’re thrilled to release it to audiences this fall.” 😴 Oh, Mike, you charmer. I’m sure audiences will be flocking to theaters to experience this “painfully relatable” nightmare. NOT! 🤣

“Dark Star perfectly aligns with our vision for THE DISINVITED – they champion films that are strange, scary, empathetic, and fun,” says director Devin Lawrence. “This indie was built with blood, sweat, and twisted joy, and we couldn’t ask for a better partner to help it find its audience.” Twisted joy? 🤔 Sounds about right. Good luck finding that audience, Devin! You’ll need it.🍀

The deal was negotiated by Michael Repsch on behalf of Dark Star and Andrew Van Den Houten on behalf of the filmmakers. Because, you know, these things don’t just happen by themselves. 🤝
