Max Cavalera on Soulfly’s ‘Chama’ Album: More Punk Than Your Grandma’s Knitting Circle

OMG! SOULFLY is dropping a new album called “Chama” on October 24 via Nuclear Blast Records. Max Cavalera, the mastermind 🧠 (or is it?), claims this album is all about the ATTITUDE. Like, totally dude. 🤙 He told Belgian Jasper (who?) that it’s going back to the roots, but not sonically. More like…spiritually? 🤔 Someone check on Max. Is he okay? 🤣

Max, bless his heart ❤️, says the album is punk 🤘 in its essence. Short songs, full of meaning. 🙄 Sure, Jan. We all know what THAT means… “Storm The Gates”, “No Pain = No Power”, “Nihilist” – he’s screaming these words because he BELIEVES in them! Deep, man. So deep. 🏊‍♀️ I bet he’s screaming them at his cereal in the morning.🥣

He says doing GO AHEAD AND DIE and NAILBOMB (remember those? 👴) gave him the idea that not everything has to be so professional. 🤣 Wait, SOULFLY was ever professional? News to me. 📰 Apparently, the greatest stuff comes from spur-of-the-moment ideas. So, basically, this album is a bunch of random thoughts thrown at a wall. 🧱 Got it. 💯

“No Pain = No Power” features Dino Cazares (FEAR FACTORY), Gabe Franco (UNTO OTHERS) and Ben Cook (NO WARNING). Sounds like a recipe for…something. 🍲 And then there’s “Ghenna,” which is a “mindfuck of a song.” 🤯 He doesn’t even know what’s going on in it! 😂 No verse, no chorus, just pure chaos. Max is just winging it, folks! 🕊️ “Storm The Gates” is like SOULFLY ’99 – back when the dreadlocks were still bouncing. 😂 Good times, good times. 👴

Zyon Cavalera, Max’s son 👦, co-produced “Chama.” Family affair! 👨‍👩‍👦 Recorded at Platinum Underground Studio in Mesa, Arizona.🌵 Sounds legit. Arthur Rizk, who “helped to shape the world of heavy metal” (according to whom?! 🤡), handled the mixing and mastering. They even got Carletta Parrish to do the album artwork. 🎨 Hope she got paid in something other than exposure. 💸 Igor Amadeus Cavalera (more family! 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦) played bass and Mike De Leon played guitar. Dino Cazares is on a track, because why not? 🤷‍♂️

So, the lineup is: Max on vocals and guitar, Igor on bass, Zyon on drums, and Mike on guitar. Riveting. 😴

Max also told MetalUnderground.com that the album has the “adventurous spirit” of the first SOULFLY record. 🤡 Okay, Max. Sonically different, but spiritually the same. Right. 👍 It’s like he went back in time to channel his younger self. ⌚️ How…meta? 🤔 He’s using his first album as inspiration for his THIRTEENTH album! 🤣 Someone get this man a participation trophy. 🏆

He says this album is a return to what fans fell in love with SOULFLY for. 💖 But then admits the other albums went “more thrashy”. So, basically, they’re trying to recapture the magic. 🪄 Good luck with that! 🍀 It’s a “challenge” to make something inspired by the first album without copying it. 💯 So, it’s gonna be full-on metal inspiration with its own personality. 🤡 I’m sure it will be…something. 💩

SOULFLY had Chase Bryant (WARBRINGER) playing bass on the European tour because Mike Leon is out. Seems like there is a new bassist every time I check. 🔄 Mike DeLeon has been touring with SOULFLY for two years. He used to be in Philip Anselmo’s band and even filled in for Zakk Wylde at a PANTERA rehearsal. 🎭 Talk about connections! 🕸️

In conclusion, “Chama” is either going to be a glorious return to form or a complete train wreck. 🚂 Only time will tell. ⏳ Either way, it’s going to be entertaining. 😂
