Oh boy, are you guys ready for some juicy drama? 🤯 Because Gene Hoglan, the legendary drummer from DEATH, just spilled the tea on the 2016 documentary “Death By Metal” and it’s a wild ride. Apparently, one of the people involved in the documentary told him to “throw Chuck Schuldiner under the bus” and share all the dirt on the late DEATH frontman. Yeah, because that’s exactly what you want to do when making a documentary about a metal legend – stir up controversy and drama. 🙄
So, let’s get into it. Gene Hoglan was interviewed by the IMPACT Metal Channel and shared his thoughts on the documentary. He mentioned that he didn’t have a good experience with the documentary and that one of the people involved in the project was trying to get him to say some negative things about Chuck Schuldiner. Because, you know, that’s exactly what the world needs – more drama and controversy in the metal scene. 🤦♂️
But Wait, There’s More!
It turns out that Gene Hoglan was not a fan of the documentary and thought that it was trying to create controversy where there wasn’t any. He also mentioned that he preferred the 2025 docuseries “Into The Void: Life, Death & Heavy Metal” which he thought did a better job of telling Chuck’s story. Because, you know, who needs drama and controversy when you can just tell the story of a metal legend in a respectful and dignified way? 🙏
But, of course, the drama doesn’t stop there. It turns out that the director of the documentary, Felipe Belalcazar, had a different vision for the project and wanted to show Chuck Schuldiner as a “regular dude” who was passionate about his work. Because, you know, that’s exactly what the world needs – more documentaries that humanize metal legends and make them seem like regular people. 🤷♂️
The Plot Thickens
And then there’s the lawsuit filed by Chuck’s sister, mother, and nephew against Perserverance Holdings LTD, the corporation that managed Chuck’s legacy. Apparently, they claimed that the former manager of DEATH, Eric Greif, was taking a disproportionate share of the money from Chuck’s intellectual properties and not upholding the original agreement. Because, you know, nothing says “metal” like a good old-fashioned lawsuit. 🤑
But, in all seriousness, it’s interesting to see how the story of Chuck Schuldiner and DEATH is still unfolding even years after his passing. From documentaries to books, it’s clear that his legacy continues to inspire and influence new generations of metal fans. And, of course, who can forget the fully authorized biography “Born Human: The Life And Music Of Death’s Chuck Schuldiner” which was released in November 2025? Because, you know, what’s a metal legend without a good biography to go along with it? 📚
So, there you have it folks. The drama, the controversy, the lawsuits – it’s all here in the wild world of metal. But, hey, at least we can all agree that Chuck Schuldiner was a metal legend who deserves to be remembered and celebrated. And, who knows, maybe one day we’ll get a documentary that actually does him justice. 🤔 Until then, we’ll just have to keep on headbanging and throwing up the horns. m/
