So, I’m sitting here sipping my coffee and reading about a guy who got tossed into the air by a bison at Yellowstone National Park. I mean, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear about a bison attack? “Well, that’s a bad day.” Carl McDaniel, 65, was visiting the park with his 13-year-old grandson when they encountered a large bison that seemed harmless at first. They even took a few photos and decided to walk on. But then, a truck drove by and the driver laid on the horn, apparently trying to get the bison to move. Big mistake.
The bison got agitated and started running towards McDaniel and his grandson. McDaniel told his grandson to run in one direction and he went the other, trying to draw the bison away. But the bison was too fast, and it pushed McDaniel with its head, sending him flying into the air. I mean, can you imagine? One minute you’re walking with your grandson, enjoying the scenery, and the next you’re airborne, courtesy of a angry bison.
Luckily, a photographer named Mike MacLeod was there and he stepped in to help. He ran at the bison, yelling and trying to be as big and intimidating as possible, and managed to scare it away. McDaniel was left with a broken femur, the strongest bone in the body, in four places near his hip, and several bruises. He had surgery and is now undergoing physical therapy.
The National Park Service advises visitors to stay at least 25 feet away from bison at all times and to never approach the animals. Good advice, if you ask me. I mean, why take the risk, right? It’s not like you’re going to win a prize for getting close to a bison. Although, I have to say, the mental image of a bison launching someone into the air is quite… vivid.
The incident is a reminder to respect wildlife and keep a safe distance. As McDaniel said, it could have been catastrophic, but fortunately, it wasn’t. And let’s be real, if you’re going to get attacked by a bison, it’s probably going to make the news. I mean, Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’re all reading about it over our morning coffee.
In conclusion, this story is a wild ride, and I’m not just talking about the bison. It’s a reminder to be careful when interacting with wildlife and to always follow the rules. And if you’re ever in a situation like McDaniel’s, just remember to stay calm and try to get out of the way. Unless you’re a photographer, in which case, you might want to grab your camera and get a shot of that bison in action. After all, as they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and a video of a bison launching someone into the air is probably worth a lot more than that.
