Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is at it again, promising thousands of dollars in direct payments to Americans if Republicans keep their congressional majorities. This isn’t the first time he’s made such a promise, and I’m starting to think it’s just a habit of his at this point. Ten months ago, he was talking about tariff dividend checks of $2,000, and before that, he proposed giving Americans rebates funded by the money supposedly saved by his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Let’s just say those checks never arrived, and I’m not holding my breath for these new ones either.
I mean, come on, the man has a history of making promises he can’t keep. He’s floated giving people money at least four times in the last 19 months, and each time it’s been a big fat nothing. There was the $2,000 tariff dividend promise, the $5,000 DOGE dividend checks, and even a proposal to give Obamacare recipients $1,000-$1,500. And let’s not forget the Covid pandemic stimulus checks, which were actually a bipartisan effort and not just a Trump thing.
Now, Trump is promising $5,000 to every adult US citizen if Republicans win the midterms. Because, you know, that’s exactly what the country needs – more empty promises. And the best part is, he’s describing it like a quid pro quo, where voters get $5,000 in exchange for putting Republicans back in power. I’m no expert, but that sounds an awful lot like bribery to me.
But hey, maybe I’m just being cynical. Maybe Trump really does plan to follow through on this promise. Except, of course, for the fact that it would cost over $1 trillion, which is more than the entire discretionary budget for the federal government. And let’s not forget the national debt, which just hit $40 trillion. Yeah, because that’s exactly what we need – more debt.
It’s not just me who thinks this is a bad idea, either. Some of Trump’s own allies are calling it out, with Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale saying he’s “strongly against bread and circus bribes.” And Republican former Rep. Bob Good of Virginia called it “Trump’s $5K ‘dividend’ socialist vote-buying scheme.” I guess you could say they’re not exactly thrilled about the idea.
Trump has a history of accusing others of bribery, too. He’s called out Democrats for trying to buy votes, and even accused former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg of doing the same. But I guess it’s okay when he does it, right? I mean, who needs consistency in politics, anyway?
In the end, it’s all just a big show, folks. Trump is trying to buy votes, plain and simple. And if you believe he’ll actually follow through on this promise, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. So, go ahead and take this one with a grain of salt, because it’s just another example of Trump being Trump.
As I finish my coffee and wrap up this article, I’m left with one thought: you can’t make this stuff up. The fact that Trump thinks he can just promise people thousands of dollars and expect them to vote for him is just laughable. But hey, I guess that’s just politics as usual, right? 😂
