Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one – it seems like businesses are finally figuring out that we want to interact with humans, not just screens and machines. I mean, who wouldn’t want to chat with a barista or a store clerk every now and then? It’s not like we’re all just robots who only care about efficiency and speed. The article talks about how touchscreen kiosks, self-checkout machines, and QR-code menus were supposed to make our lives easier, but really they just ended up frustrating us and making us feel like we’re missing out on human interaction.

I have to say, I’m a bit surprised that it took businesses this long to realize that we want to feel like we’re part of a community, not just isolated individuals staring at screens. I mean, haven’t they noticed that we’re willing to wait in line for hours just to meet someone and have a conversation? It’s like, hello, we’re social creatures! We crave interaction and connection. And yet, for years, companies have been pushing us towards more automation and less human interaction.

But now, it seems like they’re finally getting the message. Fast-food chains, restaurants, and retailers are ditching their self-service tech and focusing on hiring more staff and creating a more welcoming atmosphere. Starbucks, for example, is spending $1 billion to make its coffee shops feel more like, well, coffee shops again. They’re adding armchairs, plants, and books, and even training their baristas to be more friendly and engaging. McDonald’s is also getting in on the action, training its workers to greet customers with enthusiasm and hospitality.

And it’s not just the food industry – retailers like Walmart, Target, and Costco are also ripping out their self-checkout stands and opting for more human interaction. Amazon, on the other hand, has shut down its cashier-less Go stores. It’s like they’re finally realizing that we want to feel like we’re valued and appreciated, not just treated like robots.

According to researchers at Drexel University, customers feel more rewarded and valued when they interact with humans, rather than self-checkout machines. And a study found that when customers are rung up by a human, they’re more likely to revisit the store in the future. It’s like, duh! We want to feel like we’re part of a community, not just a statistic in a database.

But what really gets me is that businesses seem to have been putting the cart before the horse. They’ve been trying to sell us on the idea of self-service and automation, rather than actually listening to what we want. Christopher Andrews, a sociologist at Drew University, says that companies have been offering up newer, cheaper ways of ordering food and checking out, and then trying to convince us that we should change. It’s like, no, we don’t want to change – we want to be treated like humans, not just efficient machines.

In the end, it’s all about finding a balance between technology and human interaction. We don’t want to go back to the dark ages, but we also don’t want to be treated like robots. We want to feel like we’re part of a community, like we’re valued and appreciated. And if businesses can figure out how to do that, then maybe, just maybe, we’ll start to see a resurgence of human interaction and community. And that’s a future I can get on board with – now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go refill my coffee cup!
