A criminal investigation is underway, and it’s possible that the camp’s owners could face manslaughter or negligent homicide charges. I mean, 27 girls lost their lives in that devastating flood, and it’s just heartbreaking. The court documents show that investigators are looking into the camp’s emergency plans, or lack thereof, and it seems like they didn’t do enough to prepare for a situation like this.
The investigators are looking for electronic communications from the camp’s owners, which could provide evidence of manslaughter, negligent homicide, or other crimes. No charges have been brought yet, but it’s clear that the authorities are taking this very seriously. I’m not surprised, given the circumstances. I mean, who doesn’t have a plan in place for emergency situations, especially when you’re dealing with kids?
Brant Johnston, with the Texas Rangers, wrote in an affidavit that Camp Mystic had inadequate emergency plans and failed to conduct emergency drills or training. He also said that some cabins didn’t have enough adult counselors, and the owners didn’t take precautions to relocate the children from low-lying cabins despite monitoring late-night flood warnings. It’s just shocking, really. You’d think that a camp would have all these things in place, especially in an area prone to flooding.
Johnston also wrote that young campers can’t be expected to recognize a rapidly developing hazard or evacuate without direction from adult supervisors. It’s just common sense, really. And he concluded that the camp was aware of and consciously disregarded a substantial and unjustifiable risk of death to the campers in their care. That’s a pretty strong statement, and it’s clear that the investigators are not holding back.

If you’ve got nothing to hide, then why not talk to the investigators?
The Eastland family and other camp leaders have testified in courtrooms and in front of the state Legislature, though, with the camp director offering a tearful apology. I guess that’s a start, but it’s not enough, really. The families of the victims deserve more than just an apology; they deserve justice.
