Trump Claims Grocery Prices Have Miraculously Plummeted, Again

Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is at it again, trying to convince us that the economy is doing great and inflation is under control. According to CNN, Trump has been sticking to his communications strategy of, well, let’s just say “stretching the truth” about the state of the economy. He’s been claiming that grocery prices have come way down since former President Joe Biden left office, which is just not true. In fact, grocery prices have increased 3.4% on average since January 2025, and overall consumer prices are up 4.8% over the same time period.

I mean, come on, Trump’s been saying things like “The prices for groceries have come way down from Biden. Almost every price has come way down.” And then he says “With the exception of oil, everything is going down.” Bless their hearts, someone needs to fact-check this guy. The federal Consumer Price Index shows that five of the six overarching categories of grocery products are up substantially since January 2025, including cereals and bakery products, meats, poultry, fish and eggs, fruits and vegetables, nonalcoholic beverages and beverage materials, and “other food at home”.

Now, I know Trump loves to tout the decline in egg prices, and yes, they are down 31.1% since January 2025. But that’s not exactly a representative example, folks. No other grocery product or product category has fallen even a third as much as eggs have during this presidency. And let’s not forget, coffee is up 21.8%, and the beef and veal category is up 16.5%. Dozens of additional grocery products have seen smaller increases.

It’s not just oil, folks. Numerous products are getting more expensive, not “going down”. Food, shelter, and new vehicles have all gotten pricier, to cite a few notable examples. And Trump’s claim that he inherited the worst inflation in history? Not true. The year-over-year inflation rate was 2.9% in Biden’s last full month in office, December 2024, and 3% in January 2025, the month Trump took over. Even that 3% rate is lower, not higher, than the most recent rates under Trump.

The year-over-year inflation rate has been above 3% in each of the six months since the start of the Iran war. It’s possible that the rate will decline in September and beyond, but Trump’s suggestion of a major improvement from the level he inherited is not supported by the current data. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, but I just think it’s a bunch of hype.

In conclusion, folks, it looks like Trump’s got some ‘splainin’ to do when it comes to the economy. His claims about inflation and grocery prices just don’t add up. I guess you could say he’s trying to put a positive spin on things, but it’s just not working. And that’s the truth, folks. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go refill my coffee cup – it’s gone up 21.8% since January 2025, after all!
