Square Enix revives Romancing SaGa 3 for another nostalgia fueled cash grab

Square Enix is kicking off 2027 with a bang, or rather, a familiar bang, as they’ve announced yet another remake to add to their ever-growing list of re-releases. This time, it’s Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, a full-fledged remake of the 1995 Super Famicom classic, set to launch on February 16, 2027, for all modern systems because, you know, the gaming industry is all about nostalgia and rehashing old ideas these days. The game promises to update the original with 3D graphics, fully voiced cutscenes, and overhauled combat systems, but let’s be real, it’s probably just going to be a cash grab to milk the franchise for all it’s worth.

The Remake Conundrum

The announcement of Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United raises the question: how many remakes is too many? It seems like every other game these days is a remake or a re-release of some sort. Are developers really out of ideas, or are publishers just too lazy to greenlight new projects? Perhaps it’s a combination of both, but one thing’s for sure – gamers are being forced to shell out their hard-earned cash for the same games over and over again.

A Blast from the Past

For those who may not be familiar with the original Romancing SaGa 3, the game was released in 1995 for the Super Famicom and was known for its robust player choice and unique magic system. The game also featured a wealth of minigames and focused on eight distinct protagonists, each with their own storylines and motivations. It’s a shame that the remake will likely be touted as a “new” game, rather than a re-release of a classic, but hey, at least the younger generation will get to experience it, right?

The Story So Far

In Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, players take control of one of eight protagonists, each with their own unique perspective and story. The game’s story revolves around the Rise of Morastrum, a catastrophic event that occurs every 300 years, destroying all newborn life and sparing only a single survivor known as the Child of Destiny. It’s a complex and engaging narrative, but will it be enough to draw in new players, or will it be just another rehashing of old ideas?

The game launches on February 16, 2027, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, because of course it does. Because what’s a game release without a dozen different platforms to choose from? And let’s not forget the inevitable DLCs, season passes, and microtransactions that will surely follow. But hey, at least we’ll get to experience Romancing SaGa 3 in all its remade glory, right? So, get ready to shell out your cash and experience the same game you played 20 years ago, but with slightly better graphics and a few new features. Joy.
