Oh joy, oh rapture! Dark Funeral is working on new music and I can barely contain my excitement 🙄. I mean, who doesn’t love a good dose of black metal to spice up their mundane lives? In a recent interview with Ed Hackimer of This Day In Metal, Lord Ahriman, the primary guitarist, songwriter, and sole founding member of Dark Funeral, revealed that the band is nearing the end of the writing process for their follow-up to “We Are The Apocalypse”, which was released in March 2022. Because, you know, the world was just missing a new Dark Funeral album to make it complete.
So, it seems that Lord Ahriman is excited, but vocalist Heljarmadr (Andreas Vingbäck) is being a bit of a buzzkill, telling him not to jinx it. I guess that’s what happens when you’ve been in the black metal scene for as long as these guys have – you start to get a little superstitious. Anyway, Lord Ahriman claims that the new songs are developing nicely and that Heljarmadr is “on fire” – which, let’s be real, is probably just code for “he’s not as grumpy as usual”.
The Visual Side of Things
Lord Ahriman also talked about his vision for Dark Funeral’s upcoming live show, because, you know, the music is only half the experience. He wants to bring a more visual element to the stage, which is pretty standard for black metal bands. I mean, who doesn’t love a good corpse paint and some pyrotechnics to get them in the mood for some soul-crushing music? He’s all about creating an immersive experience, like a “movie playing in front of” the audience – because, you know, that’s exactly what I want when I’m trying to headbang and drink a beer at the same time.
But, of course, it’s not all fun and games. Lord Ahriman is also concerned about the cost of bringing this vision to life, because, let’s face it, being a black metal band isn’t exactly a lucrative business. I mean, who needs money when you can have artistic integrity, right? So, they’re working on trying to make it happen within their budget, because that’s what you do when you’re a DIY black metal band – you make do with what you have.
A New Live Album and Some Nostalgia
In other news, Dark Funeral is releasing a new live album, “A Beast To Praise”, on August 21, 2026, via Century Media Records. Because, you know, the world was just missing a live album from these guys. The LP was recorded at FÃ¥llan in Stockholm in 2022 and captures the band’s live performance in support of “We Are The Apocalypse”. And, if you’re feeling nostalgic, you can always go back and listen to their debut album, which was re-released in August 2024 as a 30th-anniversary edition. Because, you know, 30 years of black metal is definitely something to celebrate.
So, there you have it – Dark Funeral is working on new music and a new live show, and we can all barely contain our excitement. I mean, who wouldn’t want to listen to some new black metal and watch a bunch of guys in corpse paint run around on stage? It’s not like we have better things to do with our time. But hey, at least it’ll be a good excuse to break out the old black eyeliner and leather jacket – it’s been too long since I’ve had a good headbanging session. 🤘
