Shapiro Throws Caution to the AI Wind with Guardrails Suggestion

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is calling for greater federal regulation of AI, and I’m sitting here thinking, “Well, that’s a new one.” I mean, I’ve seen some wild things in my time, but this AI business is something else. Shapiro criticized President Donald Trump for minimizing concerns about AI, saying “We cannot ignore the warning signs nor downplay the very real risks.” I’m not sure what’s more entertaining, the fact that Shapiro is suddenly an AI expert or that Trump is still using all caps to type out “HOAX” on Twitter.

Shapiro spoke at an AI summit in Pittsburgh, where he said he’s not a “doomer” who thinks AI is going to take over the world, but he does have real concerns. He also called for the federal government to “develop strict guardrails” on AI, including third-party oversight and greater transparency. I’m no expert, but it sounds like he’s trying to find a middle ground between letting AI run wild and slamming on the brakes.

The debate about regulating AI has escalated, with industry leaders calling for a slowdown in development. Democrats like Shapiro are trying to figure out how to approach AI, and even President Barack Obama has weighed in, encouraging potential presidential candidates to prioritize AI policy. It’s like the whole world has gone AI-crazy, and I’m just over here trying to keep up.

Shapiro also pushed for building international consensus on regulating AI, which is a pretty reasonable idea. He thinks Trump should discuss “practical guardrails” with China’s President Xi Jinping, which might actually be a good idea. But then again, this is politics, so who knows what will actually happen.

Trump, on the other hand, has been pushing back against calls for regulation, calling concerns about AI a “sick conspiracy.” And on the other end of the spectrum, Sen. Bernie Sanders has called for a ban on superintelligence that could subvert human control. It’s like the whole country is having a big argument about AI, and I’m just sitting here with my coffee, thinking, “You know, folks, this is getting interesting.”

Shapiro delivered his speech several weeks after issuing an executive order aimed at limiting AI-generating data centers in Pennsylvania. He’s also run attack ads against his GOP opponent, Stacy Garrity, calling her “Pennsylvania’s number one fan of data centers.” It’s like a big game of political football, and AI is the ball.

In the end, Shapiro called out companies in the AI industry that might be working to thwart regulation efforts. He said, “Some of those same companies who have been calling for regulation in public have been funding the groups in private who have been fighting against it.” It’s like he’s saying, “Hey, you can’t have it both ways, folks.” And I’m just sitting here thinking, “You know what, Shapiro? You might be onto something there.”

So, to sum it all up, Shapiro is calling for AI regulation, Trump is pushing back, and the whole country is arguing about it. And I’m just over here, sipping my coffee and thinking, “Well, this is certainly a wild ride.” 🙄 And who knows, maybe one day we’ll have AI that can make us all a nice cup of coffee, and we can just sit back and enjoy the show.
