I mean, what’s the strategy here? Is Trump trying to distract from Paxton’s actual liabilities, like his personal and professional scandals, by focusing on his wardrobe choices? Bless their hearts, I have no idea what’s going on in that mind of his.
It all started on September 2, when Trump alluded to Paxton being a bit of a slob no fewer than three separate times. He said things like, “Some people don’t like the way he dresses,” and “You might not love his look, you might not love his television interviews, but he was the best attorney general in the country, perhaps.” I’m not sure what’s more entertaining, Trump’s insults or Paxton’s apparent lack of charisma. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
Trump continued to rag on Paxton on successive nights of the Republican midterm convention in Dallas this week. He even said, “He may not dress right, he may not talk exactly perfectly, and he may not be the best-looking guy I’ve ever seen. But you know what he is? He’s the greatest attorney general in America.” Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’re all stuck reading about it.
There are a few potential explanations for all this. Maybe Trump is trying to focus on Paxton’s less-offensive liabilities, like his appearance, rather than his actual scandals. Or perhaps he’s trying to draw attention to Paxton’s supposed competence by saying he’s a great attorney general, despite how he looks. But a final potential motivation is something more insidious – maybe Trump is setting the stage to blame Paxton for a potential loss.
The polls generally show a margin-of-error race, and some show Democratic state Rep. James Talarico slightly ahead. What’s pretty clear, though, is that Paxton hasn’t really rallied Republicans to his side after a brutal primary four months ago. So maybe Trump decided it’s worth trying something – anything – to give him a little boost. He’s just chosen a very curious method, that’s for sure.
In conclusion, this whole situation is just a big mess, folks. Trump’s antics are either going to help or hurt Paxton, but one thing’s for sure – they’re making for some entertaining reading.
