Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about this Virginia man, Brian Cole Jr., who’s accused of planting two pipe bombs in Washington, DC, the night before the 2021 US Capitol insurrection. I’ve got to say, it’s quite a story. A federal judge just ruled that President Donald Trump’s pardon of January 6 rioters doesn’t apply to Cole, and I’m not surprised. I mean, the pardon was for people convicted of attacking the US Capitol, not for someone who allegedly planted bombs near the Republican and Democratic national committees’ headquarters the night before.
Now, Cole’s lawyers were trying to argue that he should be covered by Trump’s pardon because his alleged conduct is “inextricably and demonstrably tethered to” the events at the Capitol on January 6. But, come on, that’s a bit of a stretch. The judge, Amir H. Ali, didn’t buy it, and I don’t blame him. The pardon is expressly limited to people who had been convicted of offenses related to the events at the Capitol, and Cole hadn’t even been charged until many months after the pardon was issued.
I have to chuckle at the idea that Cole’s lawyers thought they could get him off the hook with this argument. It’s like they were trying to convince the judge that planting pipe bombs is just a minor detail. But, of course, it’s not. It’s a serious crime, and Cole is facing serious charges.
The FBI alleges that Cole compiled bomb-making supplies for months before leaving the viable explosive devices outside of the political offices. And, during interviews with the FBI, Cole told investigators that he believed the 2020 election was stolen. I’m not sure what’s more disturbing, the fact that he planted bombs or the fact that he thought the election was stolen. Either way, it’s clear that Cole has some issues that need to be addressed.
The case is ongoing, and Cole is due back in court on Wednesday for a status hearing. I’m curious to see how this will all play out. Will Cole’s lawyers come up with some new argument to try to get him off the hook? Or will the judge just throw the book at him? Either way, it’s going to be an interesting ride.
In the meantime, I’m just going to sit back, sip my coffee, and enjoy the show. After all, as they say, “you can’t make this stuff up.” The drama, the intrigue, the pipe bombs – it’s all just so… entertaining. But, in all seriousness, it’s a reminder that we need to take these kinds of crimes seriously and make sure that people like Cole are held accountable for their actions.
In conclusion, the story of Brian Cole Jr. is a wild one, folks. From planting pipe bombs to trying to get off the hook with a dubious argument, it’s been a rollercoaster ride. But, in the end, justice will be served, and Cole will face the consequences of his actions. And that’s no joke – unless you’re a fan of dark humor, in which case, it’s a real knee-slapper. 😊
