Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about President Donald Trump’s latest social media post, where he’s defending his pick for Attorney General, Todd Blanche. Trump said Blanche “should be immediately approved” as his permanent pick for the role, and I’m thinking, okay, that’s a pretty straightforward statement. But then he goes on to defend this $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” that’s been a point of contention, and I’m like, here we go again.
I mean, the fund has been called “controversial” and it’s the reason why some Republicans, like Texas Sen. John Cornyn and North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis, are withholding their support for Blanche’s nomination. Trump’s comments come a day after he said he wouldn’t object to “temporarily withdrawing” Blanche’s nomination until after Cornyn and Tillis are out of office, which, let’s be real, sounds like a bit of a threat.
Now, Blanche has already said the fund is “dead” and the Justice Department has told courts the program was abandoned, but Cornyn wants written assurances that it won’t be revived. And I get it, Cornyn wants to cover his bases, but Trump is insisting that the fund wouldn’t have benefitted him personally and was meant for those “whose lives were unfairly and illegally destroyed” by the Biden administration. I’m not sure what to make of that, but it sounds like a pretty heated debate.
Trump also claimed that Cornyn “never had a problem” with the fund, but now he’s withholding support for Blanche, and I’m thinking, okay, this is getting juicy. Trump suggested that Cornyn is being stubborn because he didn’t endorse him in his primary race, and instead endorsed his opponent, Ken Paxton. And Cornyn is denying that, saying it’s not about the endorsement, but about getting a Senate-confirmed Attorney General.
It’s all a bit of a mess, if you ask me. Trump is saying one thing, Cornyn is saying another, and I’m just over here trying to keep up. I mean, Trump said maybe Cornyn is upset with him because he didn’t endorse him, and I’m like, maybe, just maybe, it’s about the fund and the nomination process.
Cornyn is saying that the President’s potential withdrawal of the nominee wouldn’t solve any problems, and that the DOJ needs a Senate-confirmed Attorney General, which, fair point. He’s also saying that Blanche is probably the best they’re going to get, which, I mean, that’s not exactly a glowing endorsement.
In conclusion, it’s all a bit of a drama fest, with Trump and Cornyn going back and forth about the nomination and the fund. But hey, at least it’s making for some interesting reading. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll get to the bottom of it all, but until then, I’ll just be over here sipping my coffee and enjoying the show. After all, as the saying goes, “you can’t make this stuff up,” and I’m inclined to agree, especially on days like today when the news is just wild.
