Billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin is doubling down on Miami, announcing a whopping $3 billion donation to help fund a new campus for Carnegie Mellon University in the city. I mean, that’s a lot of zeros. The donation is the largest-ever gift by an individual in higher education, surpassing Michael Bloomberg’s $1.8 billion donation to Johns Hopkins University in 2018. Griffin’s donation will be split: $1 billion will support CMU’s original campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and $2 billion will help launch CMU’s Miami campus. You can’t make this stuff up, right?
The new campus, CMU Miami, is expected to launch in the city’s Wynwood neighborhood in 2028, and it will supposedly “pioneer a new model for higher education.” I’m not entirely sure what that means, but it sounds fancy. The university said the campus will organize learning around “societal challenges” rather than traditional academic majors, focusing on areas like human health, national security, and energy resilience. Sounds like a plan to me.
Griffin’s massive investment comes as he has increasingly shifted his money and business interests to South Florida. He moved his business’s headquarters from Chicago to Miami in 2022, and recently said he would redirect investments from New York City to Miami. I guess you could say he’s putting his money where his mouth is. Meanwhile, the rise of artificial intelligence has sparked growing fears that a traditional four-year college education will become obsolete. But hey, with a $3 billion donation, I’m sure CMU Miami will be just fine.
CMU President Farnam Jahanian said, “Artificial intelligence represents one of the defining intellectual developments of our time, and it demands that we rethink how we educate students, conduct research and partner with others.” Sounds like a solid plan, but I’m no expert. As part of the donation, CMU’s School of Computer Science will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. Nice touch, Ken.
Construction on the new campus is slated to begin next year, and once completed, it will support over 3,500 students. That’s a lot of young minds to shape and mold. Griffin has bet big on South Florida, where he attended high school, and it seems like he’s not looking back. After a high-profile spat with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over a wealth tax, Griffin said he planned to expand his business further in Miami. I guess you could say he’s taking his ball and going home.
