Bungie, those lovable rogues, are at it again! π€£ Turns out, they’ve been “inspired” by an indie artist’s work for their new game, Marathon. By “inspired,” we mean they straight-up yoinked it. Twice now, so they’re practically professionals!
Some artist going by the name of Antireal (probably a fake name, real artists are busy making *original* art, am I right? π) posted a lengthy rant on X, formerly known as Twitter (RIP bird app π¦), showing off all the “coincidences” in Marathon. Subtle similarities? Nah, we’re talking carbon copies here! π¨οΈ
Antireal whined, “Bungie is of course not obligated to hire me…” Oh, boo-hoo! π Maybe if your art wasn’t so generic, Bungie wouldn’t have needed to “borrow” it. Just kidding! π But seriously, get better material, kid. No one wants to see another space marine helmet. πͺ
And get this, some Sherlock Holmes wannabe in the replies pointed out that Marathon‘s art director, Joseph Cross, FOLLOWS Antireal! π΅οΈββοΈ The plot thickens! Or maybe Cross just has terrible taste in art. Who knows? π€·
Then, in a moment of *shocking* transparency, the MarathonDevTeam account admitted to “unauthorized” use of art. π “Unauthorized?” More like blatant theft! π΄ββ οΈ
They blamed it on a “former Bungie artist.” Convenient! π Sounds like someone’s getting thrown under the bus. π But don’t worry, Bungie promises a “thorough review.” Which probably means they’ll just find another scapegoat. π
“As a matter of policy, we do not use the work of artists without their permission,” they declared. Yeah, right! π Tell that to the artists whose work ended up in Destiny 2! Remember that fiasco? Bungie had to apologize and everything! π€‘
And let’s not forget the time they “accidentally” used fan art for a Nerf gun! π― At this point, it’s less of a mistake and more of a business model. Why pay for original art when you can just “find” it online? π€·ββοΈ
Bungie says a “thorough review” is underway. Oh, honey, we’ve heard that one before. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice… well, you’re Bungie, so we’ll probably still buy your games. π€·ββοΈ But seriously, guys, get it together! Hire some new artists, or at least learn how to Google “royalty-free images.” It’s not that hard! π€¦ββοΈ
