Duff McKagan on Iggy Pop: “No Duh, He’s the Real Deal (Unlike My Hair Dye)”

DUFF MCKAGAN, the bassist from that band your mom likes, GUNS N’ ROSES (yeah, them), decided to grace us with his profound wisdom in a new video on his YouTube channel. 🙄

Apparently, fans are just DYING to know what he thinks. One brave soul asked what it was like playing with Iggy Pop, and Duff, in his infinite generosity, shared his thoughts (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET, because who else would care?). “Well, I’ve done it a couple times now,” he bragged, “I’m fortunate enough to say, in my lifetime.” Oh, bless your heart, Duff. He then proceeded to call Iggy a “hero” and a “badass.” Groundbreaking stuff, truly. 🤯 He also mentioned something about writing music for Iggy’s latest record and playing shows with a “killer band” featuring such luminaries as Chad Smith (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS – you know, the other band your mom likes), Andrew Watt, Jamie Hince, and even Matt Clifford from THE ROLLING STONES. So humble, this Duff. Just a regular Joe rubbing elbows with rock royalty. 🤷‍♂️

Duff continued his soliloquy, stating, “Playing with Iggy is… yeah.” Profound! He then issued a dire warning: “When you get into rehearsals, you’d better know your shit, and when you get on stage with him in front of an audience, know your shit well enough to be able to let it all go because you’re on stage with Iggy and that’s not gonna happen very many times in your life.” Translation: Iggy is old and unpredictable, so try not to screw up too badly. 🤣

Apparently, this isn’t the first time Duff has basked in Iggy‘s glory. Three and a half decades ago (yes, he’s THAT old), McKagan contributed to Pop‘s “Brick By Brick” album. He described the experience as “super epic” but, you know, slightly tarnished by his raging alcoholism at the time. Boo hoo. 😭 Fast forward to 2023, and Duff got another chance to work with Iggy on the album “Every Loser” (fitting title, eh?). He even got to play shows with Iggy to promote the record. Because nothing says “relevant” like touring with a geriatric rocker. 👴

“This time was kind of a redo,” Duff explained during a 2024 appearance on the “Rockonteurs” podcast (another platform for his endless self-promotion). “And to be able to put together a band for him, and he let us pick the setlist… This is the soundtrack to my life, where do you start?” Oh, the drama! The angst! The sheer importance of it all! Someone get this man a tissue. 🤧

But wait, there’s more! Pop, in a rare display of reciprocity (or maybe he just felt sorry for Duff), returned the favor by appearing on McKagan‘s solo album “Lighthouse”, released in October 2023. Because everyone needs a little help selling records these days, especially when your solo career is about as exciting as watching paint dry. 😴

We are then reminded that, starting at the tender age of 15, McKagan has been a part of such groundbreaking and influential bands as THE VAINS (1979), THE FASTBACKS (1980), THE LIVING (1982), THE FARTZ (yes, you read that right, 1990), 10 MINUTE WARNING (1993), and LOADED (1998). And of course, let’s not forget his “historic” role as a founding member of GUNS N’ ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER. Because without him, those bands would have been, uh, exactly the same? 🤔 But wait, there’s MORE! In addition to his “prolific” musical endeavors, McKagan is a The New York Times best-selling author of “It’s So Easy: And Other Lies” (because honesty is overrated) and “How To Be A Man: (And Other Illusions)” (clearly, he’s still figuring that one out). He’s also the co-host of the popular “Three Chords & The Truth” radio show, because why not? It airs on SiriusXM‘s Ozzy’s Boneyard (Ch. 38) – the perfect place for washed-up rockers to reminisce about the good old days. And if you’re REALLY desperate for more Duff, you can catch his show on stations around the globe, including the U.K.’s Planet Rock, Denmark’s myROCK, Finland’s Radio Rock, Germany/Switzerland/Austria’s Rock Antenne, Iceland and Canada’s x977, and Poland’s Antyradio. Because who needs sleep when you can listen to Duff McKagan talk about himself? 🤮
