Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about California state Sen. Scott Wiener, who got surrounded by protesters at San Francisco’s annual Trans March. Apparently, they were not happy with his stance on Gaza, and things got pretty heated. I mean, who doesn’t love a good controversy, right? Wiener, a Jewish and gay Democrat, has been a prominent figure in the debates over transgender rights and US policy toward Israel. He’s taken some positions that have drawn criticism from supporters of Israel, and now it seems like he’s facing the consequences.
As I read on, I found out that Wiener was walking through Dolores Park when a group of protesters started filming and following him, berating him over his position on Gaza. One of them even said, “It breaks my heart that someone who wrote good legislation for queers is so f**king terrible on Gaza.” I guess you could say Wiener is a bit of a complicated figure – he’s done some great work for the LGBTQ+ community, but his views on Israel have put him at odds with some people.
The protesters were pretty aggressive, flashing their middle fingers and accusing Wiener of being “genocidal” and having “Zionist handlers.” Wiener didn’t engage with them, though, and just tried to exit the park. I can understand why – it’s not exactly the most pleasant situation to be in. He later issued a statement saying that the protesters touched him multiple times and that he ultimately decided to leave the park, believing he and his staff could be in danger.
It turns out that this wasn’t the only incident Wiener has faced recently. A few days earlier, a man accosted him and his staff at a Mission District bar where he was watching a World Cup game. The guy screamed abuse at them and even followed them outside, shouting Wiener’s name and pounding on the wall. Wiener said the same individual had stalked him on a plane and in an airport in December 2023. I guess you could say Wiener has a bit of a fan club – not exactly the kind you’d want, though.
Wiener has said that he supports Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and affirmed its right to protect itself after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. However, he’s also been critical of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and has called for a two-state solution. He’s taken some positions that have drawn criticism from supporters of Israel, including opposing US military aid to Israel until its government demonstrates a commitment to peace, and describing Israel’s military action in Gaza as a genocide. I guess you could say he’s a bit of a lightning rod for controversy.
As I finished reading the article, I couldn’t help but think that Wiener is in a bit of a tough spot. He’s trying to navigate the complex world of politics, and it seems like he’s managed to piss off a few people along the way. But hey, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. In conclusion, the story of Scott Wiener and his encounter with protesters at the Trans March is a complex one, full of twists and turns. It just goes to show that in politics, you’re never going to please everyone – and sometimes, you’ll even get protesters shouting at you in the park. Ah, the joys of being a politician, right? 🙄
