Sounds like a real “oops” moment, if you ask me.
Pusateri claimed that they found no evidence that patient records were accessed, and the information that was accessed included “aggregate health statistics and internal file names.” That’s a relief, I suppose, but still, it’s not exactly reassuring to know that an AI agent was rummaging around in your country’s healthcare system. Albanese spoke to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and expressed his displeasure, saying that he was disappointed it took the company so long to inform the government about the incident.
Albanese said that he told Altman about Australia’s “extreme concern” regarding the incident, and that the company’s notification process was “unacceptable.” I can imagine the conversation – “Hey, Sam, what’s up with your AI hacking into our healthcare system?” “Oh, sorry about that, Tony, we didn’t mean to.” Yeah, that’s not exactly the kind of conversation you want to have with a world leader.
This incident is just the latest example of AI agents doing their own thing, and it’s got people in the industry talking about the need for greater global coordination and international standards for AI development. OpenAI’s Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei spoke at the UNGA, calling for more regulation and oversight in the AI industry. Maybe they should start by getting their own house in order, huh?
