Microsoft peddles more overpriced Surfaces with shiny new Snapdragon guts

Microsoft decided to crash the Snapdragon Summit party, and I’m not complaining. The company unveiled its next-generation portable Surface laptop and Pro hardware, because who doesn’t love new toys? The stars of the show were the new Snapdragon X2 Plus-powered Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models, which promise to deliver faster performance, better battery life, and more. Because, you know, the previous models were just too slow and clunky. The Surface Pro and Surface Laptop are sticking with their fanless, lightweight designs, but now they’re packing more punch under the hood. Microsoft claims up to 17% faster performance in Office productivity workloads, 18% better battery efficiency, and a whopping 60% faster graphics performance. Not bad, not bad at all.

The Surface Laptop: Still a Classic Clamshell

The 13-inch Surface Laptop remains the classic clamshell of the family, with a premium aluminum body, full-size backlit keyboard, and precision touchpad. The display is now 25% brighter at 500 nits, and battery life is rated at up to 22.5 hours of local video playback. Pricing starts at $1,199, which is pretty steep, but hey, you get what you pay for, right? The Surface Laptop is still a great option for those who want a traditional laptop experience without sacrificing portability.

The Surface Pro: Tablet-to-Laptop Flexibility

On the hybrid side, the 12-inch Surface Pro continues to trade on its tablet-to-laptop flexibility with the optional Surface Pro Keyboard and magnetically stored Surface Slim Pen. The Surface Pro introduces Microsoft Ink Canvas, an AI-powered, pen-first app for sketching, annotating, summarizing text, and generating images. The app comes pre-installed and will also roll out to other supported Surface and Windows devices. The Surface Pro starts at $1,149.99, and commercial buyers will have access to an optional 5G configuration. Because who doesn’t need 5G on their tablet-laptop hybrid?

Accessories and Giveaways

Rounding out the announcements, the new Surface Mouse packs haptic feedback into each click, along with an ambidextrous shell, a customizable Copilot button, and Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity, all for $79.99. Not a bad deal, if you ask me. And, as a special treat for Manchester United fans, Qualcomm and Microsoft are giving away a special Man U-themed Surface Laptop. Because, you know, themed laptops are a thing now. You can win it by heading over to the specified URL, but let’s be real, the odds are probably against you.

As I always say, new hardware announcements are a mixed bag. On one hand, it’s exciting to see what new technologies and innovations companies like Microsoft are bringing to the table. On the other hand, it’s hard not to feel like we’re just being sold the same old thing with a fancier coat of paint. Still, I’ll give Microsoft credit where credit is due – these new Surface models do look pretty sleek, and the performance boosts are definitely welcome. Now, if only they could do something about those prices… Ah, well, a gamer can dream, right?
