Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest drama surrounding Senator Susan Collins, and I have to say, it’s a wild ride. Maine Democrats are calling on Collins to answer for a report that her office promised to steer millions of dollars in federal contracts to a Hawaii-based defense contractor in exchange for donations to her 2020 campaign. Because, you know, that’s not a recipe for disaster or anything.
The report from ProPublica claims that executives from the contractor, Navatek, met with a top fundraiser for Collins in 2019, and a donation was made in exchange for tens of millions of dollars in government contracts. Now, I’m no expert, but that sounds like a pretty big no-no. The CEO of Navatek, Martin Kao, allegedly agreed to cut a check to Collins’ campaign in exchange for the contracts, despite the fact that government contractors aren’t supposed to make political contributions.
Devon Murphy-Anderson, the executive director of the Maine Democratic Party, is demanding that Collins answer for these allegations, saying “This is an incredibly serious allegation that we need Susan Collins to respond to and address immediately.” I mean, bless their hearts, they’re really going after Collins on this one. Murphy-Anderson also said that they’re not calling for Collins to resign, they just want some answers. Sure, because that’s exactly what this is about – getting answers.
ProPublica reported that Kao sent $150,000 to Collins’ campaign fundraising arm using a shell company, and later told other executives that Collins had committed to giving Navatek $32 million in government contracts. The story even included a picture of a check made out to the pro-Collins 1820 PAC from the purported shell company “Society of Young Women Scientist and Engineers, LLC.” You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
Collins’ team is denying all of this, of course. Her deputy chief of staff, Annie Clark, said that the allegations are “categorically false.” The FBI also issued a statement saying that they investigated these allegations years ago and found nothing implicating Senator Collins or her campaign. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a big ol’ mess on our hands.
The Collins campaign is fighting back, with campaign manager Steve Abbott calling ProPublica’s reporting “outrageous.” He said that they hear these kinds of allegations every cycle, and it’s just the same thing over and over again. I mean, I can see why they’d be frustrated, but still, this is some serious stuff.
Kao, the CEO of Navatek, pleaded guilty to making unlawful campaign contributions and was sentenced to an additional 33 months in prison. Collins, meanwhile, ended up winning her 2020 contest against Democrat Sara Gideon by more than 8 points. I guess that’s what they mean by “money can’t buy you love, but it can buy you a Senate seat.”
In conclusion, this whole thing is a big mess, and I’m not sure what to make of it. The Democrats are demanding answers, the Republicans are denying everything, and the FBI is saying they’ve already investigated and found nothing. I’m just going to sit back, sip my coffee, and enjoy the show. After all, as they say, “politics is like a circus, and we’re all just clowns in the audience.” 🤡
