Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump said Monday that he did not discuss the US selling weapons to China during his recent meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, contradicting an assertion made by the US ambassador to China a day earlier. I mean, who doesn’t love a good game of diplomatic telephone? It’s like a big game of “he said, she said” on the world stage.
So, US Ambassador to China David Perdue told Fox News Sunday that Trump “continues to say: hey, we sell arms to other people around the world,” and that the president “actually asked President Xi, would he like to buy some, at one point.” You can just imagine the conversation, right? “Hey Xi, nice suit, want to buy some guns?” I’m sure it was a totally normal and not-at-all-awkward conversation.
Pressed on Perdue’s comments Monday, Trump seemed surprised. “To China? You mean to Taiwan? I’ve never heard of that one. I’m going to have to ask him,” Trump said. Oh boy, I love it when world leaders play dumb. It’s like they think we won’t notice. “Now, they’d probably like to buy it because we do make better equipment than that, so maybe it’s a good idea. But we didn’t discuss that.” Sure, because that’s exactly what China needs, more guns.
He added about Perdue’s comments: “He may have been talking about Taiwan. I think he was talking about Taiwan.” Bless their hearts, it’s like they’re trying to convince us that they’re not completely confused. Following the ambassador’s remarks Sunday, the State Department also disputed that the US was contemplating selling arms to China, telling reporters that, “U.S. law prohibits arms sales to China and there is no offer or plan to sell arms to China.” Yeah, because that clears up any confusion.
And a US official added: “The U.S. government has no plans to sell weapons to China.” Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying and decided to run with it. I mean, who needs facts when you have speculation and hearsay? It’s not like we have better things to worry about, like actual news.
In conclusion, it seems like there’s been a big misunderstanding, or maybe just a big miscommunication. Either way, it’s been entertaining to watch. So, let’s all just take a deep breath and remember that world leaders are human too (mostly). And who knows, maybe one day we’ll get to see Trump and Xi having a laugh about it over a nice cup of coffee 🙄.
