Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about Kamala Harris’ latest suggestion to expand the Supreme Court to 13 justices, and I’ve got to say, it’s an interesting idea. According to CNN, Harris said at the National Urban League’s annual conference in Nashville that “we need to revisit the point of expanding the court to 13 justices like we have 13 district courts.” Now, I’m not sure if this is a brilliant plan or just a way to get more liberals on the court, but I’m entertained nonetheless. Harris also called for a review of the Electoral College and statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington, DC, because why not, right? It’s not like we don’t have enough to deal with already.
As I continue reading, I see that Harris’ comments come as potential 2028 presidential candidates are trying to one-up each other with reform ideas. Her remarks are more forceful than when she said during her 2020 White House bid that she was “open to that discussion.” I guess you could say she’s been sipping on some extra bold coffee, because she’s definitely more enthusiastic about it now.
You can’t help but wonder if this is just a way for Democrats to counter what they see as disproportionate conservative influence over the court’s decision-making. I mean, six of the nine justices were appointed by Republican presidents, including three who were selected by Trump. It’s like they’re trying to balance out the scales or something.
As vice president, Harris backed Supreme Court changes proposed by President Joe Biden, such as term limits, though those proposals did not include increasing the number of justices. I’m starting to think that Harris is just trying to make a name for herself as the “court reform queen” or something.
It’s not just Harris, though – other Democrats have proposed expanding the court to counter conservative influence. Some, like former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, have even suggested a 15-member court. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is also a longtime proponent of adding more justices. I’m starting to think that they’re just trying to create a court that’s as big as their egos.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has voiced skepticism of increasing the number of justices, but he’s warming up to the idea. Maybe he’s just trying to stay relevant in the conversation, who knows? In any case, it’s clear that this is going to be a topic of discussion for a while, and I’m here for the popcorn.
In conclusion, the idea of expanding the Supreme Court to 13 justices is certainly an interesting one, and it’s clear that Harris and other Democrats are passionate about it. While I’m not sure if it’s the best idea, I do appreciate the entertainment value it brings to the political scene. As I finish my coffee, I’m left wondering what other surprises the 2028 presidential election has in store for us – and I’m sure it’ll be a wild ride. 🙄
