Breaking News: Metal Scene Mourns the Loss of a Legend, But Let's Be Real, We're All Just Here for the Free Beer 🍺

In a shocking turn of events, the metal world is still reeling from the loss of Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, the iconic frontman of AT THE GATES. But let’s not forget, the real tragedy here is that the metal scene will never be the same without his legendary party antics 🎉. Shane Embury, the bassist of NAPALM DEATH and LOCK UP, sat down with Stefan Nilsson of Roppongi Rocks to talk about his dear friend and bandmate. When asked about Tomas, Shane said, “Well, Tomas was a really important person for the scene. He used to have a couple of beers and he would tell people, ‘Oh, yeah, I invented the Gothenburg [Sweden metal] scene.’ He was doing it tongue in cheek, but I sort of believe he did, to be honest.”

Because, let’s be real, who needs facts when you have a good story and a cold beer? 🍺 Shane continued to reminisce about his friend, saying, “We used to talk a lot. And strangely enough, on the last few releases, he would always send me the lyrics to read. I don’t know why. He would say, ‘Does this make sense in English?’ I’m, like, ‘Well, yes, it’s fine.'” Yeah, because nothing says “quality control” like having your friend proofread your lyrics after a few beers 📝.

But in all seriousness, Tomas was a deep thinker, and his passing has left a gaping hole in the metal scene. As Shane so eloquently put it, “He was a good friend. And it was very sad [when he died]. Really, really sad.” 😔 AT THE GATES‘ latest album, “The Ghost Of A Future Dead”, is a special tribute to Lindberg, featuring his final vocal recordings, which were recorded as demos before his 2024 surgery. It’s a bittersweet reminder of the legacy he left behind, and the fact that we’ll never get to experience his epic partying skills again 🎉.

Tomas was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare oral cancer, in December 2023, which led to a major surgery that removed a large portion of the roof of his mouth. He had also undergone radiation treatment and had been on a path to recovery, but then doctors found traces of the cancer in early 2025. In May 2025, an undisclosed “setback” placed Tomas in long-term care. He was 52 years old at the time of his death, which is just a reminder that life is short, and we should all party like rockstars while we still can 🤘.

So let’s all raise a glass (or two, or ten) to Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, the man who invented the Gothenburg metal scene, and the king of metal partying 🍻. May his legacy live on in our hearts, and in the many, many beers we’ll drink in his honor 🍺. And to Shane Embury, we say, don’t worry, buddy, we’re all here for you, and we’ll drink all the beer we can to help you cope with the loss of your dear friend 🍺🤘. Cheers to Tomas, may he rest in peace, and may his memory live on in the metal scene forever 🤘! 🎸💥🔥
