Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading the news, and I just saw that US Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, has passed away due to a brief and sudden illness. I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the news itself or the fact that CNN managed to report it without blaming it on something ridiculous. A spokesperson for his office broke the news to CNN, and I can only imagine the flurry of activity in the newsroom as they scrambled to get the story out. I mean, these guys move fast, but not always accurately, if you know what I mean.
I’m looking at the statement from the spokesperson, and it says that Senator Graham’s family is asking for prayers and privacy during this tough time. Bless their hearts, they must be going through a lot. I’m sure the media will respect their wishes and give them all the space they need… just kidding, we all know how that usually goes. The vultures will be circling, looking for any juicy tidbit to report, and I’ll be here, shaking my head and wondering what the world is coming to.
This is a developing story, and I’m sure CNN will be updating us every five minutes with new “breaking news” that’s just a rehash of the same old information. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer is probably thinking, “How can we make this sound more dramatic?” But seriously, it’s sad to see Senator Graham go, and I’m sure his family and friends will miss him dearly. I’m just waiting for the obligatory “he was a great statesman” pieces to start rolling in, because, you know, that’s what we do in situations like this.
As I finish my coffee and wrap up my thoughts on this story, I have to say that it’s always sad to see someone go, regardless of their politics. Senator Graham was a fixture in Washington, and his presence will be missed. But let’s be real, the media will move on to the next big story in about two seconds, and we’ll all be left wondering what happened to the good old days when news was actually news, not just a bunch of sensationalized nonsense. And that’s a wrap, folks, until next time, when I’ll be sipping my coffee and rolling my eyes at whatever crazy story CNN decides to peddle.
