Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest drama between New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Apparently, Mamdani said in a new video that he doesn’t have the legal authority to arrest Netanyahu if he comes to New York City. I mean, who didn’t see this coming? It’s not like Mamdani was going to start a international incident on his own. Bless their hearts for trying, though.
Mamdani posted a video on X saying that his administration reviewed all the laws and determined they can’t enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant. He’s calling on the federal government to join the ICC and execute the warrant instead. I guess that’s one way to pass the buck. You can’t blame the guy for trying, but it’s not like the federal government is going to jump on this anytime soon.
The whole thing started when Mamdani said he was working with his legal team to figure out how to arrest Netanyahu for “alleged war crimes.” I’m no lawyer, but I’m pretty sure it’s not that simple. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying and decided to run with it. Now we’ve got a big hullabaloo about nothing. Netanyahu’s office even responded, saying Mamdani is just trying to distract from his own issues.
President Donald Trump even weighed in on the debate, because of course he did. He said Netanyahu “will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form.” I’m not sure what’s more surprising, that Trump commented on this or that he managed to fit all those words into one sentence. Netanyahu might visit New York later this year for the UN general assembly, so we’ll see if anything actually comes of this. Probably not, but it’s been fun to watch.
Netanyahu’s office previously called out Mamdani for “diverting public attention from his follies and attacking the leader of the Jewish state and the only democracy in the Middle East.” Ouch, that’s a bit harsh. But hey, at least it’s not boring. I’ll just sit back, sip my coffee, and enjoy the show.
In conclusion, it’s been a wild ride watching Mamdani and Netanyahu go back and forth. I’m not sure what’s going to happen next, but I’m sure it’ll be entertaining. Maybe Mamdani can just invite Netanyahu over for a cup of coffee and they can discuss their differences like civilized people. Ha! Who am I kidding? That’s never going to happen.
