Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. The bipartisan Russia sanctions bill that GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham championed is gaining momentum, but now it’s facing headwinds because some Democrats are worried it could give President Donald Trump too much power. I mean, bless their hearts, they’re concerned that Trump will use this bill to impose tariffs left and right. The bill would impose mandatory sanctions on Russian leadership, including President Vladimir Putin, as well as oligarchs, state-owned enterprises, and foreign companies that support Russia’s defense industrial base.
It seems like the Democrats are getting a little cold feet about this bill, and I don’t blame them. I mean, who wants to give Trump more power to impose tariffs? Sen. Elizabeth Warren is one of the Democrats who’s raising concerns, saying that Trump has already shown what he’ll do with broad tariff authority. She’s not wrong, folks. Trump has been known to use his executive power to impose tariffs on various countries, and it’s not always been pretty.
The bill would also impose up to a 100% tariff on the top five countries that purchase Russian crude oil and natural gas, with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer determining the final tariff level. Now, I’m no expert, but that sounds like a lot of power to give to one person. And Sen. Mark Warner is also concerned about the administration’s tariff authority under the updated package. He’s saying that he supports Russia sanctions, but he wants more clarity on the tariff authority before he co-sponsors the legislation.
It’s a bit of a mess, folks. The Democrats are worried about giving Trump too much power, while the Republicans are trying to get the bill passed as quickly as possible. Sen. Richard Blumenthal is arguing that they’ve taken significant steps to narrow the additional tariff authorities the bill would hand to the administration, but I’m not sure that’s enough to convince the Democrats. And Sen. Ron Wyden is saying that granting the administration more power over tariffs would set a “very ominous precedent.” I think he’s got a point there.
In the end, it’s all about politics, folks. The Republicans want to get the bill passed to show that they’re tough on Russia, while the Democrats are trying to protect themselves from Trump’s tariff antics. It’s a game of cat and mouse, and I’m not sure who’s going to come out on top. But one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be a wild ride. So, grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the show.
