Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and trying to wrap my head around this one. A shootout at a crowded Seattle food festival over the weekend left two bystanders dead and several others injured. The 15-year-old arrested at the scene was firing an untraceable ghost gun into the crowd, but here’s the kicker: the bullets that killed the bystanders don’t appear to have come from his gun. Yeah, because that’s not confusing at all.
I mean, can you imagine being a detective trying to piece together this mess? The King County prosecutor’s office has filed charges against the teen, including first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement, but it’s clear they’ve still got a lot of work to do to figure out what actually happened. And let’s not forget the fact that there were apparently at least four weapons fired during the shootout – it’s a miracle more people weren’t hurt.
The police are still trying to identify at least one other person involved in the shooting, and they’re reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses. Oh, and there’s also the matter of an eighth person who checked into a hospital with a possible gunshot wound, but then checked out before investigators could talk to them. Because, you know, that’s not suspicious at all.
The 15-year-old suspect is facing some serious charges, and prosecutors are asking to move the case to adult court. If that happens, he could be looking at some serious prison time – we’re talking eight to 10 years, plus possibly another five years for the firearm enhancement. But, of course, the judge could also choose to sentence him as a juvenile, which would be a whole different story.
As I finish my coffee and try to process all of this, I’m left wondering how something like this could happen at a food festival of all places. I mean, who expects to get caught in a shootout while eating a turkey leg and walking around a festival? It’s just crazy. And the fact that the police are still trying to figure out who fired the fatal shots is just mind-boggling. Well, I guess that’s just the world we live in now – where you can’t even go to a food festival without worrying about getting shot. 🙄
